Position summary:

This position will analyze the transmission expansion needed to improve reliability, accommodate load growth and generation expansion on the three Black Hills Energy transmission systems. The tools that will be used in this role include but are not limited to PSS/E, Power World or PSLF.

Pay Range:This posting includes the full pay range for this position. Pay is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity.

Engineer I:$69,350.00 - $104,000.00

Engineer II:$82,550 - $123,800

Engineer Senior:$92,500 - $152,450

Reporting Relationship:Transmission Planning Manager

Location:Rapid City, South Dakota

Essential Functions:

• Support the design and analysis of assigned aspects of computer-based load flow and short circuit studies required to evaluate the electric transmission system. Support the evaluation of system performance and recommend engineering solutions to address system risks, reliability and load growth over a one, five, and ten-year planning horizon. Assist with initial engineering plans for new projects. Support the Project Origination process.

• Perform tasks of limited and specific scope under the direction of experienced personnel.

• Apply standard engineering practices and techniques, utilizing prescribed methods in carrying out a sequence of engineering tasks. As needed, apply best practices for engineering related questions.

• Learn to anticipate problems. Solve a range of problems and analyze possible solutions using standard procedures.

• Provide engineering support for internal BHE customer representatives. Participate in discussions with customers as assigned by Transmission Planning Manager.

• Actively contribute to department/project work. Develop project management skills, and support projects as assigned.

• Support studies associated with the interconnection of new load, generation or transmission facilities and develop technical writing skills in support of these study efforts.

• Complete all WECC, WestConnect and CCPG base case updates per the WECC data prep manual.

• Support full compliance with all applicable NERC and WECC Reliability Standard requirements. Act as Primary Standard Owner for all NERC standards and complete annual RSAWs.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Develop the ability to prioritize workflow, establish schedules, monitor accomplishments and provide project management and administrative support for assigned work. Support safety, diversity and social responsibility goals of the department and company.

• Participate in formal training programs for the improvement of job knowledge and technical skills when made available. Attend industry training to maintain proficiency in areas of responsibility in order to develop sound recommendations.

• Other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

Engineer I:

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Computer Science required.

Engineer II:

• Bachelor's Degree Engineering or Computer Science

• Minimum of (1) one year of electric utility or electrical consultant experience along with Aspen and PSSE software knowledge in steady state simulations and/or Python coding

Engineer Senior:

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Computer Science required.

• Minimum of (4) four years of experience in transmission planning studies (study state and transient stability) at a utility or consulting firm

• Experience with PSSE software and Python coding

What Is Desired Or Can Be Taught:

• No planning experience necessary. Training will be provided.

• Ability to develop a basic understanding of NERC, FERC and tariff requirements.

• Understanding of electrical circuits, utility electrical system design, drawings and engineering analysis.

• Ability to develop a familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code and electric utility industry safety work practices.

• Ability to develop a working knowledge of applicable technical and regulatory compliance standards.

• Ability to work independently as well as in cross-functional teams.

• Detail-oriented with a focus on documentation and organization.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with staff at all levels within the organization. Be able to convey technical information to non-technical personnel.

• Ability to learn and maintain proficiency with use, programming, and automation of new systems and software as technology evolves.

• Ability to develop project management skills, and ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner with supervision and accurately record time spent on projects.

• Ability to learn and maintain proficiency in reading electrical one-lines, control drawings and schematics.
