The Senior Director, Global Medical Affairs Operations Excellence will report directly to the Global Head of Medical Affairs Strategy and Execution - Oncology and supporting the Vice President of Global Medical Affairs - Oncology. The Senior Director will play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction and optimizing operational efficiency within the Oncology Medical Affairs function on a global scale. This role will be accountable for overall strategic support across all oncology disease areas with a focus on operational excellence, process optimization, innovative evolution, cross-functional collaboration and partnership, budget planning and resource management, overall team talent development, and support of medical affairs IT-related system deployment and implementation.

Strategic Leadership and Direction:

  • Collaborate closely with the Global Head of Medical Affairs Strategy and Execution - Oncology to define and set the strategic direction for the team.

  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight for the development and execution of medical affairs initiatives and programs in alignment with the overall oncology portfolio strategy.

  • Support evaluation, assessment, and development of long-term strategies medical affairs strategies, with a focus on implementing operational aspects and facilitating long-range planning initiatives.

Operational Excellence and Process Optimization:

  • Establish robust processes and guiding principles within to drive operational efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Lead efforts to optimize workflows, streamline end-to-end processes, and implement best practices to enhance operational performance and medical excellence across the team.

  • Develop metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor and measure the success of essential elements of medical affairs operations.

  • Represent Oncology Medical Affairs in partnering with functional partners to maintain common ground to reach both innovative and compliance excellence.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial Operations, and Market Access, Healthcare Compliance, and Contracting to ensure alignment and integration of medical affairs activities.

  • Foster collaboration and communication across internal stakeholders to drive cross-functional initiatives and achieve shared objectives in oncology

Budget Planning and Resource Management:

  • Collaborate with Finance to manage and track budgets, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and efficient resource allocation.

  • Monitor budget performance against latest thinking, identify trends, and recommend adjustments as needed to optimize resource utilization and achieve financial targets.

Talent Development and Team Building:

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team within Oncology Medical Affairs, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation.

  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to team members to enhance their skills and capabilities.

  • Maintain a consistent view of responsibilities and workload to recommend resource re-allocations when needed.

Medical Affairs IT System Development and Implementation:

  • Lead the evaluation, development, and implementation of medical affairs technology resources, leveraging the latest trends in artificial intelligence (AI) and sentiment analysis to enhance insight assessment and decision-making processes.

  • Ensure the effective integration of IT processes with existing infrastructure and workflows, driving efficiency and innovation in medical affairs operations.

  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and trends in medical affairs/industry IT and identify opportunities to leverage external scientific engagement systems and tools to enhance collaboration and knowledge sharing.

  • Manage the portfolio of technology-related initiatives to ensure synergies across, visibility of activities and status, and to monitor the most at-risk challenges for escalation.

Qualifications

Qualifications - External

Candidate must have strong communication, presentation, interpersonal and influencing skills. This position requires a highly motivated individual with excellent time management and multitasking skills, intellectual curiosity, people management excellence, and proven leadership skills. Must possess the ability to partner and closely collaborate with all levels of the organization.

  • Position requires knowledge of all common office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, etc.)

  • BA/BS required; MS/MBA preferred. Alternatively a Bachelor’s degree with 12 years of relevant experience.

  • An advanced degree (MBA or MS) is preferred.

  • Minimum of three years of people management experience required

  • Pharmaceutical industry experience required.

  • Expertise in areas of drug development, strategic planning, business planning, cross-functional collaboration/alignment, and in-depth knowledge of Medical Affairs

  • Experience designing and implementing new processes and capabilities.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing and mentoring medical affairs team members. Excellent people leadership skills in a global matrix environment are required.

  • Sound financial acumen and experience managing resources and budgets. Effective leadership skills and proven ability to effectively manage stakeholders, foster team productivity and cohesiveness.

  • Excellent communication skills and the innate flexibility to work in a rapidly growing and highly matrixed organization.

  • Ability to interact with all levels of management and influence decision making.

  • Ability to manage complexity and demonstrate innovative approaches to change management.

  • Proven track record of driving results with a sense of urgency in a complex and rapidly changing environment.

  • Strong presentation and communication skills – must be able to provide succinct strategic and actionable insights to senior management.

  • Global mindset with proven ability to partner cross culturally and regionally.

  • Strong organizational skills with experience managing multiple programs with demanding timelines.

  • Vendor management experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of healthcare compliance principles and local/regional regulations and laws.

  • Up to 15% Travel is required.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $187,000 to $322,000.
