Microsoft Corporation Principal Applied Scientist in Redmond, Washington

We are looking for a Principal Applied Scientist in Redmond, WA or Mountain View, CA , with a background in Machine Learning(ML), Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence), Data Science, Data Mining, or related fields.

Candidates should have a keen interest in artificial intelligence and optimization at the web scale.

They will play a key role in driving algorithmic improvements to online and offline systems, develop and deliver robust and scalable solutions, make direct impact to both user and advertisers experience, and continually improve our KPIs.

The Search and AI organization includes the product, engineering, and science teams working towards making Microsoft’s Bing search engine globally state of the art.

Responsibilities

  • Building and owning production machine learning models to improve results

  • Working hands on with state of art generative models like GPT, Llama, Mistral, and others, to deliver big impact

  • Finding insights and forming hypothesis on large-scale data with various machine learning, feature engineering, statistical, and data mining techniques: e.g. regression, classification, NLP, optimization.

  • Designing experiments, understanding the resulting data, and producing actionable, trustworthy conclusions from them

  • Wrangling large amounts of data (think petabytes) using various tools, including open-source ones and your own. All programming languages are welcome, especially Python, C#, R, C++, Java, and SQL

  • Taking complex problems and the associated data and giving the answers in a concise form to assist executives in making key business decisions

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., machine learning, Natural Language Processing)

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., machine learning, Natural Language Processing)

  • OR Doctorate in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., machine learning, Natural Language Processing)

  • OR equivalent experience

  • 6+ years related experience in Natural Language Processing or Machine Learning technologies

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate (PhD) in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience

  • Practical experience with Large Language Models (LLMs) is highly preferred.

  • Experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers) in Machine learning conferences (e.g. ICML-International Conference of ML, NeurIPS-Neural Information and Processing Systems, ICLR-International Conference on Learning Representations)

Applied Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
