Microsoft Corporation Principal System Engineer in Redmond, Washington

As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

We are looking for a Principal System Engineer to join the team.

Responsibilities

  • Gather the Data center and business group requirements for the node/rack hardware components.

  • Participate in concept, design, and development, conduct design reviews, and manage product requirements.

  • Work with Original Design Manufacturers(ODMs), other system engineers, internal design teams and customers to develop validation execution plans for new technologies and Microsoft Intellectual property features.

  • Developing quality criteria for different phases of programs

  • Work with ODMs, Silicon vendors, component suppliers and internal design teams on cross-boundary triaging, debugging, and resolving issues.

  • Review system engineering and validation coverage throughout the lifecycle of the program and publish plan vs. progress reports.

  • Develop node/rack system level test cases, test requirements against system level requirements and verify them for functionality at node/rack level.

  • Work with stakeholders on process improvement, data quality improvement and cross-boundary triaging.

  • Automate review process to improve data quality and scaling capability.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • Knowledge of Computer Architecture, Server architecture at block level, Electrical/Power/Thermal Hardware Design and HW/FW/OS interactions are required.

  • Knowledge in different interfaces such as Peripheral Component Interconnect Express(PCI-E), Double Data Rate(DDR), Inter-Integrated Circuit(I2C), Serial Peripheral Interface(SPI) etc.

  • Experience in test automation concepts, execution, and system debug methodologies.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in evaluating hardware designs, HW/FW/OS interactions, platform config trade-offs, and end-to-end error flows is preferred.

  • Experienced in debugging complex system level issues related to board hardware, signal integrity, Complex Programmable Logic Device(CPLD), thermal and Firmware components is preferred.

  • Technical communication skills (verbal and written) interface with cross-functional technical leads within and/or outside of the organization.

  • Experience in test automation script development using C/Python or any other programming language would be an added advantage.

Hardware Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
