Microsoft Corporation Regional Datacenter Principal Program Manager - Fiber Management in Redmond, Washington

Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers our cloud services. As a CO+I Regional Datacenter Director, you will perform a key role in delivering the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform. As the Regional Principal Program Manager - fiber management , you will drive the delivery of world-class cloud services across your region.  You will build our fiber management team from the ground up. You will take on the challenge of developing a programmatic approach for managing and maintaining Microsoft owned fiber in our datacenters. You will work with vendors to augment existing fiber installations. You will manage a team of fiber specialists who are geographically dispersed throughout North and South America. You will take on the challenge of maintaining 100% availability for all Microsoft owned fiber. You will interact and maintain relationships with various authorities and partners across all sectors of the datacenter industry. You will use keen business acumen and financial management skills to manage operating costs effectively, while maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, and ecological responsibility. Interpersonal awareness, ability to navigate ambiguity, and your mature communication skills will be pivotal in bringing your program management, technical abilities, and leadership experiences to a whole new level in supporting Microsoft’s success!

Responsibilities

As a  Regional Datacenter Principal Program Manager for fiber management ,your success is measured by:

Datacenter Fiber Management Operations

  • Prevent fiber cuts, fiber degradation and fiber related outages.

  • Empower a culture of safety, security, and compliance in all aspects of datacenter operations.  

  • Leadership, management, coaching, and development of Microsoft full time employees across datacenters in your region.  

  • Collaborate, communicate, present, and negotiate effectively across groups of various levels and disciplines, such as government entities, senior Microsoft leaders, suppliers, partners, technicians, customers, as it relates to fiber delivery maintenance and management.

  • Accountable for the ongoing delivery of trouble Microsoft owned fiber and lateral fiber ensuring the on-time and defect-free delivery of customer capacity within our SLA commitments.   

  • Responsible for the planning and delivery of all supporting physical infrastructure, logistics, and the resources required to deliver bulk fiber for new and expanding data centers. 

  • Financial management of portfolio including the development of detailed budgets, forecasts, management of operational, and capital spend for fiber operations.

  • Management and oversight of all vendor/partner contracts and relationships including leased-facility landlords, IT and CE service providers, and partner support teams for fiber related operations. 

  • Collaborate with global and regional management teams and contribute to improvement programs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent AND 10+ years’ experience of mission-critical service management experience supporting or operating mission-critical, 24x7x365 production environments. 

  • 5+ years’ experience in leading, directly managing, and influencing a diverse organization of full-time employees responsible for fiber delivery, maintenance and management.

  • 10+ years’ experience working on large enterprise, fiber, cable or cloud scale projects and programs.  

  • 5+ years’ experience designing and executing enterprise level fiber related projects.

The ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in General science, General Engineering, Telecommunications, Business Management, or equivalent experiences.  

  • 10+ years' experience managing dark and lit fiber providers.

  • 10+ years' experience performing aerial and underground fiber delivery.

  • 10+ years' experience performing disaster recovery operations for enterprise fiber installations.

  • 5+ years’ experience managing fiber network build, augment and operations in major metro areas such as: Phoenix AZ, Baltimore MD, Chicago IL, Washington DC, Dallas TX, Cleveland OH, Orange County CA, and the Contra Costa County CA.

  • 5+ years performing outside and/or inside of plant fiber installation, management and maintenance.

  • Experience and solid understanding of multi-country labor laws and employment terms & conditions.   

  • Working knowledge of datacenter infrastructures (e.g., Servers, SANs, Networking, Capacity, DC Rack/Enclosures, Meet Me Rooms, and fiber installation.). 

  • Background in design and construction principles for fiber installations.  

  • Fiber supply chain, asset management or logistics background and experience.  

  • Awareness of IT Service Operations fundamentals and principles. (ITIL, MOF, OLA/SLA, CSI, etc.). 

  • Previous experience with MS Cloud Services and Platforms (e.g., Windows Azure, Office 365, etc.).

Data Center Operations Management M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,800 - $267,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,800 - $294,000 per year.
