Microsoft Corporation Senior Software Engineer in Redmond, Washington

Do you have a passion for engineering and a talent for solving complex problems in production systems? Do you want to work on the Linux Operating System (OS) platforms that power Azure. The Linux System Group (LSG) within Core OS is seeking a talented Senior Software Engineer who can contribute toward enhancing and maintaining Linux applications and develop automation to maintain the quality of Linux guest OS in Azure. The team is responsible for ensuring the best experience for our Linux customers in Azure. As a member of this team, you will have the opportunity to design and implement solutions that improve the Operating System (OS) platform and deliver value to our customers.

To deliver on our vision, we are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with the passion to learn and dive deep into new technical areas. You will be able to identify key areas to focus engineering efforts to maximize return, solve the problems impacting our platform experience, and drive solutions to improve future platform operations.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop & maintain Linux applications in Azure.

  • Design and develop test automation solutions for validating Linux features in Azure.

  • Work closely with both internal and external customers, coordinate design and coding across multiple live projects, and partner with independent teams in disparate geographic locations. 

  • Work closely with open-source projects such as Linux, representing Microsoft as a solid community partner and contributor. You will be working on research and development in cutting edge accelerations and optimizations to power future public and private clouds.

  • Collaborate and support partner teams.

  • Define and push the limits of innovative technologies -- working with the latest hardware, the largest servers, and even larger data centers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, Java, C# C, C++, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of software dev & test experience with at least 4 years working on Linux/Open-Source projects.  

Other Requirements

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Solid knowledge in Linux internals and fundamental knowledge in Linux kernels.

  • Experience in Dev-Ops and Test Automation.

  • Technical expertise and contributions to one or more of the following:

  • Validate and ensure the quality of Linux kernel and Linux distros, and experience in troubleshooting and tuning Linux system performance.

  • Development of open-source applications on Linux platform.

  • Solid aptitude in designing, developing, debugging, and validating software products.

  • Technical passion, terrific problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently.

  • Passionate about quality and engineering excellence as one needs to work as an all-rounder engineer focusing on Dev, test & support

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with external teams (open source, standards, and/or partners)

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience working with distributed systems in a cloud environment. 

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
