Microsoft Corporation Software Engineer II in Redmond, Washington

The AI Frameworks MAIA team at Microsoft develops cutting-edge AI software for a wide range of platforms, from the world's fastest AI supercomputers to servers, desktops, mobile phones, internet of things (IoT) devices, and web browsers. We work closely with hardware teams and partners to develop software stacks for innovative AI accelerators like the Maia 100. Our team collaborates with Machine Learning (ML) researchers and developers to optimize and scale out model training and inference.

We are seeking a Software Engineer II to join our team!

As a Software Engineer II, you will be responsible for implementing end-to-end features and infrastructure to enable advanced scenarios across all levels of our stack; from high-level developer ecosystems like PyTorch, ONNX, and Triton, down to low-level optimizations directly on the device runtimes and hardware itself. Your day to day will see contributions to and interfacing with foundational abstractions, programming models, compilers, runtimes, libraries, and APIs, all focused on enabling large-scale training and inference of sophisticated AI models on innovative AI hardware. This is a technical role requiring hands-on software design and development skills to build a complete end-to-end AI stack.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop system-level abstractions, programming models, tooling, runtimes, libraries, and APIs.

  • Collaborate with hardware teams and partners to build software stacks for novel AI accelerators.

  • Build seamless developer experiences across all platforms.

  • ·Reviews code of a product feature to assure it meets the team's and Microsoft’s quality standards, is reliable and accurate, and is appropriate for the scale of the product feature.

  • Applies feedback to current and future iterations

  • Participates in code reviews to ensure coding standards are followed

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 1+ years of experience with C/C+ Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

  • 1+ years’ experience with Python

  • A technical background and solid foundation in software engineering principles and architecture design

  • Deep intellectual curiosity and passion about learning new technologies

  • Exposure to Deep Neural Network training and inference and experience in one or more deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, Tensorflow, ONNX, etc)

  • Cross-team collaboration skills and the desire to collaborate in a team of researchers and developers

  • Demonstrated history of solving challenging technical problems.

  • Experience in software design and development.

  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a focus on enabling vertical scenarios through scalable and flexible solutions.

  • Ability to take initiative and move quickly.

  • Passion for building an end-to-end AI stack.

  • Ability to work effectively in diverse and inclusive teams.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,300 - $182,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $120,900 - $198,600 per year.
