Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

We are looking for an experienced Test Development Engineer to design and develop test infrastructure for mechanical satellite systems that help test and develop satellite flight hardware, holding the gate to flight readiness. This is a fast-paced, intellectually challenging opportunity to work with thought leaders in multiple technology areas. You’ll have relentlessly high standards for yourself and everyone you work with, and you’ll be constantly looking for ways to improve your product’s performance, quality, and reliability.- Design, develop, and implement test equipment and infrastructure used in satellite flight hardware development and qualification.

Key job responsibilities

  • Author, refine and implement validation, verification, acceptance and qualification test procedures.

  • Develop test automation, data acquisition and control SW

  • Develop post-processing SW tools to decompose test data into desired metrics.

  • Participate in design reviews, and risk assessments, to contribute to the continuous improvement of satellite hardware performance and reliability.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, systems, reliability, and quality engineers, to gather information, share findings, and develop solutions

Export Control Requirement:

A day in the life

As a Project Kuiper Test Development Engineer, you will own the design and implementation of automated test equipment used to validate satellite hardware designs from initial prototypes, though functional testing, and into pilot production. You will work with design and manufacturing teams to specify test equipment requirements, develop test plans, and execute test campaigns to support development and production test initiatives. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and comfortable operating in a fast-paced development environment.

About the team

This team is organized within the satellite mechanical design team to accelerate the design iteration process and ensure on-time delivery of the most stable and successful product possible. The tasks and daily focus change rapidly, and you will often take on new and exciting responsibilities as required to ensure project success. Expect to be deployed to complex problems that are driving the design, identify the scope of the issue, and quickly establish functional solutions able to be tested and integrated into the design. You’ll be constantly looking for ways to improve your product’s performance, quality and cost.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • 3+ years of experience in design and validation of hardware systems, including use of CAD (Siemens NX or similar)

  • 3+ years of experience developing test infrastructure to meet the needs of testing space craft or similarly complex systems.

  • 2+ years of experience with automating hardware testing and data analysis using Python, LabVIEW, C++ or similar

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with integration and testing of satellite hardware.

  • Experience in development of test plans and protocols related to established Space Hardware test processes (GEVS / SMC-S-016)

  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis of primary and secondary structures/FEA capability – Ansys / NASTRAN (or equivalent)

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively convey technical information and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $105,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
