Classification Description Summary

Under direction, the Senior Coordinator oversees, develops, coordinates, and implements various operations, services, and programs for the senior citizen community. The position performs work planning, organizing, implementing, and promoting cultural, recreational, community service, and informational programs to enhance the lives of senior citizens. Provides administrative and clerical support as necessary.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practice.

  • Plan, direct, coordinate and implement a wide range of activities tailored to meet the specific needs and interests of the elderly.

  • Design programs that address the social, physical and emotional needs of the senior population; programs include various in-house activities as well as sub-contracted services geared toward enhancing the senior citizens quality of life.

  • Monitor activities and program performance; recommend and implement modifications to systems and procedures; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

  • Assist in the coordination, promotion of and supervision of City sponsored events; contact local corporations to sponsor and/or participate; compile and distribute statistics of special events; hire and supervise food and beverage vendors, craft vendors and entertainment; arrange for rental needs including restrooms and lighting.

  • Promote and coordinate specific activities within the senior citizen program to stimulate interest; prepare and distribute program event and facility marketing material including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets and brochures.

  • Design publications and monthly calendar to keep participants informed of events and/or changes in the community.

  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the senior citizen community or general public; provide information regarding assigned senior citizen related programs.

  • Maintain direct contact with local, county, state, and nationwide agencies that provide information and services to the senior population.

  • Establish and maintains liaison community leaders and groups to obtain their cooperation and support of programs and services and coordinates these services with other community agencies.

  • Assess the needs of the senior population and maintain statistical data pertinent to programming; maintain appropriate records including financial reports of programs and activities.

  • Administer senior programs for the City of Reno and is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating and implementing a variety of services to enhance the quality of life and the well-being of senior citizens.

  • Responsible for directing the day-to-day administration of various activities/programs designed to meet the needs of the senior population; assist in the preparation and management of the senior budget.

  • Represent the City of Reno on community committees related to the senior citizen population and collaborate with the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee on various initiatives.

  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Basic operations, services and activities of senior citizen programs and services.

Principles and practices of public event planning and coordination, with a focus on senior citizens.

Methods and techniques of organizing, implementing, and coordinating community programs or activities.

Principles and practices of community program development and implementation.

Principles and practices of coordinating, maintaining and scheduling facilities.

Principles and theories of inclusion for senior citizens.

Marketing theories, principles and practices and their application to program.

Program content for specialized community activities.

Techniques used in public relations and customer services practices.

Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers.

Principles and procedures of record keeping.

Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.

Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Principles and practices of fiscal, statistical, and administrative research and report preparation.

Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.

Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.

Ability to:

Coordinate and direct senior citizen programs and initiatives.

Assist in the coordination and promotion of City sponsored events.

Develop, coordinate, organize, and conduct programs, activities, events, or classes in assigned area.

Understand community needs in senior citizen areas and evaluate activities according to those needs.

Recommend and implement goals and objectives for providing senior citizen services.

Elicit community and organizational support for senior citizen programs.

Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.

Allocate limited resources in a cost effective manner.

Respond to requests and inquiries from the public.

Operate office equipment including computers.

Maintain program related records, statistics, and documents.

Prepare clear and concise schedules and reports.

Work in an individual or team based environment to achieve common goals.

Coordinate multiple projects and complex tasks simultaneously.

Meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Social Work, Business Administration, Public Administration, Communication, or closely related field.

Experience:

Three years of experience supporting or managing the activities and operations of a community related program.

License or Certificate:

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and recreation facility setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
