The Staff Scientist, Algorithms will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team supporting a variety of medical and life sciences technologies and solutions with a focus on modelling and algorithm development. Interfacing closely with the experimental team, the Staff Scientist will apply a deep understanding of principles of physics, imaging, and data analysis to model and interpret data, develop image recognition and prediction algorithms, and recommend future experimental directions. This role requires the ability to understand and drive physics and engineering-based innovation projects. Because of this, the successful candidate will have a deep grounding in the fundamentals of physics and engineering along with subject matter expertise in machine learning, mathematical modelling, and algorithm development.

The Staff Scientist must be able to effectively collaborate with team members from varying backgrounds and should have strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have an interest in technically contributing to a broad range of areas in Medical Device development, Diagnostic development, and Life Science research tools. Reporting to a Senior Manager of Innovation, this is a technical position where the Staff Scientist will contribute significantly to exciting, high visibility projects and collaborations across the R&D portfolio.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with front-end innovation team to understand critical problems in Life Sciences and Medical Devices and recommend, develop, and test and implement mathematical models, simulations, and algorithms for interpreting and predicting results related to diagnostics, medical imaging / image identification, and other biomedical applications.

  • Executes all phases of algorithm and ML model development and testing appropriate to early-stage innovation projects, including model research, data preparation and processing, model training and fine-tuning, model experimenting and evaluation, and model distribution to other members of the research team.

  • Collaborate with R&D team and Data Scientists to engineer features for machine learning models.

  • Use appropriate software tools, frameworks, and platforms to program and test algorithmic approaches.

  • Interact closely with the experimental team and business partners to understand and reduce technical risk, identify potential failure modes, propose new algorithmic and experimental approaches, and prototype and test potential solutions.

  • Investigate and resolve technical problems in collaboration with the experimental team to meet program objectives and timelines.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the field of Machine Learning and AI and ensure best practices in algorithm implementation.

  • Provide subject matter expertise in mathematical modeling to project team members.

  • Prioritize work and independently executes it in support of timely completion of project goals.

  • Ability to address large and complex problems as an individual contributor or as part of a larger team.

  • Deal well with ambiguity and changing priorities.

  • Interact with senior internal and external stakeholders to accurately communicate project status and help ensure a smooth transition of projects from the Innovation phase to product development.

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Optics, or related field with emphasis on machine learning, mathematical modeling, or algorithm development

  • 5+ years of experience in algorithm development and Machine Learning.

Knowledge and Skills:

Required

  • Demonstrated strong understanding of predictive analytics algorithms (machine learning, deep learning) and statistical modelling techniques.

  • Proficient programming and signal processing in multiple development environments (Matlab, Python, C++) and experience with machine learning frameworks and architectures (PyTorch, TensorFlow)

  • Experience with data ETL, feature engineering, and visualization techniques.

  • Strong knowledge of data management processes for large-scale datasets

  • Experience with Cloud and Data platforms such as AWS, Azure, Databricks, etc.

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities to analyze complex data and requirements towards practical solutions.

  • Strong critical and creative thinking skills, analytical and quantitative problem-solving ability to come up with new solutions and approaches.

  • Excellent written and communication skills – ability to document and explain complicated algorithms and problems to non-specialists in a clear and understandable manner.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with biosensor systems and analyzing biomedical time series data.

  • Pattern recognition and/or image classification experience.

  • Familiar with computer vision algorithms like object detection networks (e.g. YOLO) and modern image classification techniques.

  • Knowledge of human physiology and monitoring methods
