At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.

Responsibilities

As a post-doctorate researcher based in EED’s Nuclear Chemistry and Engineering group, you will become part of a multi-investigator team with diverse expertise tackling challenging tank waste remediation questions across multiple programs. You will specialize in using advanced tools to characterize tank waste samples and translate that data to operationally significant processes for treatment of tank waste at the Hanford site. One key aim of this work is to integrate machine learning into current data analysis approaches. The characterization methods used will be applied to several projects with primary objectives focused on cleanup of the Hanford Site. This work will involve safe handling of radiological samples.

• Carry out experiments and/or sample preparation for characterization. Sample types may include simulants made from oxides and precipitated hydroxides and actual tank waste samples.

• Use machine learning to develop more efficient data processing methods.

• Become an integral part of PNNL waste treatment project teams, taking advantage of world-class expertise and capabilities to perform your research.

• Become familiar with the scientific questions underlying the different PNNL projects and contribute to scientific thought leadership for future research.

• Work independently, take initiative, and work on team assignments.

• Lead and contribute to manuscript development.

• Interact, communicate, and problem solve with research staff.

• Present research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings.

The successful candidate will join other postdocs and graduate fellows as part of the Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP). MSIPP is funded by the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM). DOE-EM is working to cleanup legacy radioactive waste found in soil, groundwater, and underground storage tanks. All research aligns with DOE-EM’s mission to safely immobilize and cleanup environmental legacy waste, focusing on cleanup of the Hanford Site which is one of the most complex DOE sites due to hazardous comingled contaminates. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Degree in chemical engineering with experience in either separations or material science.

• To qualify for this MSIPP position the candidate must have graduated from a minority serving institution (MSI) for either an undergraduate or graduate degree.

• Experience with developing and testing separation techniques – for example ion exchange, solvent extraction, filtration, precipitation, crystallizations.

• Experience with mathematical modeling

• Experience with slurry handling including rheology and particle size analysis

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Work is performed in a radiological facility with hazardous chemicals and radiation areas and contamination areas.
