Purpose:

To maintain and deliver quality care by utilizing appropriate and clinically competent staff throughout patient care areas and to establish Internal Nurse Specialist guidelines for staffing of Clinch Valley Medical Center personnel meeting department expectations and competency requirements while decreasing staffing vacancies.

Definition:

The Internal Nurse Specialist position is for a Full Time RN, who has competency to float in different nursing departments. There are three levels of the INS positions which are outlined as follows:

Procedure:

The INS Nurse will be scheduled three 12 hour shifts each week on the nursing schedule. In order to meet patient and or staffing needs INS Nurse will be require working different nursing units to provide direct patient care and duties. Assignment of department to work will be made by the nursing supervisor/Nurse Director/CNO making the staffing plan. The INS will obtain his/her assignment from the nursing office prior to the shift start time. The following guidelines apply to the INS Nurse Position:

  • The INS nurse will be eligible for preceptor and Charge nurse differential rate of pay.
  • The INS Nurse is not eligible for call back or crisis differential pay.
  • The INS Nurse must be in good standing and cannot receive any written form of disciplinary action or will be immediately placed back into a regular staffing position.
  • The INS Nurse must complete 8 hours of Health care related volunteer time annually.
  • If the INS Nurse is unable to work a scheduled shift and calls in the employee must schedule an alternative shift to meet the 36 hours per week requirement.
  • Must maintain compliance with mandatory request (skills checklist, mandatory in-services, adherence to hospital policies, employee health request.

Level 1

  • Competency to work: Medical Surgical, Transitional Care Unit (TCU) and Post-Partum.
  • Must have two years’ experience in Medical Surgical, TCU, or Post-Partum Nursing and /or work for 1 year in Level 1 prior to applying for Level 2 position.
  • Required to obtain ACLS within 3 months of hire
  • Required to obtain PALS within 6 months of hire

Level 2

  • Competency to work: Level 1 requirements, including ED and ICU
  • Must have two years’ experience in ICU/ED or must have completed level 1 successfully
  • Must work 1 year in Level 2 prior to applying for Level 3
  • Required to obtain TNCC and NRP within 6 months while in level 2.
  • ACLS, PALS are required.

Level 3

  • Competency to work: Level 1, Level 2, including Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Cath lab, and Nursing Supervisor
  • Must have completed Level 2 successfully, or have 2 years’ experience in ED/ICU/Cath lab/Supervisor
  • Required to have national certification (example: CEN, CCRN, MSRN, etc.)
