The opportunity:

Smurfit Westrock (SW) Analytical Services Group supports the company\u2019s paperboard, and packaging testing needs for customers, manufacturing locations, and research initiatives. A scientist\u2019s role in the lab is to perform a variety of qualitative and quantitative analysis on samples submitted to the lab in support of business needs.

How you will impact WestRock:

• Demonstrate initiative to develop new test methods and learn complex instruments.

• Perform analysis and characterization of the samples submitted to the analytical group.

• Interpret laboratory results and present reports to cross-functional teams with quick turnaround.

• Able to perform multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

• Ensure the oversee analytical instrumentation and perform routine calibration, troubleshooting and maintenance

• Train other teammates on instruments as needed

• Actively participate in and support the SW safety program.

What you need:

• PhD or master\u2019s degree in chemistry/chemical engineering or related field is required.

• 3-5 years of experience with GC-MS, Headspace and Pyr-GC-MS, sample preparation, quantitative data analysis is required

• Experience with Shimadzu and Agilent GC-MS systems is a plus

• Knowledge of paper and packaging science is valuable

• Familiarization with FT-IR, ICP, UV-vis and/or HPLC is a plus.

• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, manage competing priorities and demonstrate initiative.

• Good written and oral communication skills.

• Minimal travel (<10%)
