Responsibilities

This role is responsible for partnering with the clinical care team to assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients and the clinical team. Provides constant and alert engagement and observation for each assigned patient through monitoring, interacting and deescalating patients to prevent patient harm to self, harm to others, harm from others and flight risk.

The Safety Intervention Specialist demonstrates professionalism, effective communication and listening skills, empathy, and ability to effectively interact with patients, visitors, family members, staff and others who may present to Mayo Clinic. The Safety Intervention Specialist will demonstrate a courteous, respectful, and helpful demeanor while interacting with and observing patients. Will primarily work in patient care departments to monitor patient activity and alert the clinical care team to physical and emotional changes, and escalations in behavior. The Safety Intervention Specialist will communicate with the clinical care team to alert them to patient care needs.

Job responsibilities also include remaining calm and composed during stressful situations and effectively de-escalating conflict or stressful situations. This role may have view only access to the electronic medical record to support verifying information. This position will be required to work varied hours, which may include days, evenings, days/evenings, holidays and/or weekends with rotating days off.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with one year security, healthcare, or social/human services experience or associate degree with two years security, healthcare, or social/human services experience or HS/GED with four years security, healthcare, or social/human services experience. Ability to work with persons from multiple cultural backgrounds, age groups, and abilities required.

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, healthcare or social/human services, or law enforcement field preferred. Experience working in healthcare or counseling preferred. Experience working with vulnerable populations and behavioral interventions preferred.

Must be able to adapt in unpredictable situations, identify escalation patterns, and be able to intervene in a therapeutic manner in collaboration with the clinical care team. Strong interpersonal and communication skills required with proven ability to confidently manage conflict and high-pressure situations while building credibility and rapport with the clinical care team, patients, and visitors.

Must complete training in Verbal Judo, Crisis Intervention Training, and AVADE within 2 months of hire date.
