Job Responsibilities:

The Division of Diversity and Inclusion (DDI) is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Director for McNair Scholars. The Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating the program activities and services as specified in the McNair grant objectives. This includes the Design, coordination and implementation of college and graduate preparatory support services for low-income, first-generation-to-college, and underrepresented youth and adults in areas including: advising, instruction, tutoring, mentoring, internship, research, career planning and development, financial literacy, alumni engagement, and family outreach.

The Assistant Director for McNair reports directly to the Senior Director for CSTEP, McNair, and LSAMP.

Student Success (Recruitment & Retention):

  • Creates, develops, facilitates, and evaluates existing and new activities, opportunities, and programs. Conceptualizes and implements new programmatic ideas, events, and processes to improve overall program experience and effectiveness.

  • Assess and identify participant needs for services and make referrals to appropriate campus and community agencies. Encourage participants to participate in tutoring, program workshops, and take advantage of other resources to facilitate their success

  • Leads scheduling, communications, implementation of new, original programming.

  • Provide direct support to program participants which includes, but is not limited to: academic, college, and career advising; academic instruction; developing and leading workshops and seminars.

  • Assists Director in determining optimal ways to promote, grow, and execute the program.

  • Serves as lead for the program in the absence of the director

  • Maintain a caseload and/or provides counseling services. Serve as a mentor and advocate to participants. Formulates individualized participant plans.

  • Outreach and meet regularly with participants to discuss needs, monitor progress, and assist with the resolution of academic and/or personal challenges

  • Manage text book library and orders from students

  • Design program evaluation, monitor feedback, and incorporate suggestions for improvement. Continuously and systematically evaluates the effectiveness of program initiatives and activities

  • Manage and facilitate McNair Student Advisory Board

  • Matches eligible scholars with research faculty mentors.

  • Plan and execute Summer Undergraduate Research Program including: developing workshops, orientation, attend off campus events. Coordinate housing and meal plans with RIT campus offices.

  • Assist with selecting new class of McNair Scholars for the program.

  • Serve as main point of contact for evening meetings, events and activities

  • Develop new ways to re-engage existing participants

  • Assists participants in setting up individual graduate school visits and conference travel, including securing all travel arrangements and documentation

  • Travel with students to National McNair conferences

Student Records/Reports/Grant:

  • Manage program records and student information systems and is responsible for preparing annual program reports to the Director.

  • Assists the Director in preparing the McNair Scholars Program grant proposal and annual reporting to RIT and grant funders

  • Develops systems and processes to capture student engagement data and other program effectiveness data; and maintains online platform for student engagement tracking (Campus Groups)

  • Track McNair graduates through their doctoral degree attainments.

  • Works collaboratively with Division Financial team and SPA to manage participant stipend payments, travel funding, and reimbursements to students for eligible costs and payments on behalf of students (ie. Conference registration fees)

Marketing/Communications:

  • Lead and develop recruitment strategy, including reviewing applications for completeness and documentation of eligibility, and conducting applicant interviews.

  • Create and implement programming to engage McNair alumni

  • Works collaboratively with the DDI MARCOM team to develop ways to connect and track alumni through social media to continue the engagement with RIT as future philanthropists

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • 1-3 years’ experience working with underrepresented students required

  • Graduate school application process experience

  • A strong knowledge of higher education environment. RIT knowledge a plus.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience and/or interest in developing marketing initiatives

  • Experience and/or interest in developing alumni programming
