Job Responsibilities:

Drives and places diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at the forefront of Deaf Hub programming:

  • Ensures equitable recruitment and retention efforts of BIPOC DHH in biomedical and healthcare careers.

  • Regularly reviews all Deaf Hub programming to identify areas of improvement

  • Establish Deaf Hub DEI plan and diversity statement in a manner that supports NTID’s Antiracism and Social Justice Plan

  • Identifies, coordinates, and provides training, seminars, and efforts to increase inclusion and minimize bias for Deaf Hub personnel

  • Hosts events for the NTID community such as listening sessions, companion programming with NTID ODI

  • Provides mentorship and additional support to BIPOC DHH students in the Deaf Hub

  • Maintains a relationship with key partners at RIT/NTID, including but not limited to the NTID ODI Staff Retention Specialist and the Assistant Dean NTID Faculty Recruitment and Retention.

Assists with oversight of Deaf Hub mentorship programs:

  • Oversee the successful implementation of the Mentor-Supported Shadowing Program

  • Leads MSSP programming, including hosting informational sessions, facilitating Professional Development classes, and arranging shadowing activities

  • Provides pre-, during, and post- guidance to healthcare professionals for most effective shadowing experiences with students

  • Maintains a relationship with potential mentors and healthcare professionals and grows database

  • Collects data, does analysis and provides reports, metrics, and budgeting information to Executive Director

  • Ensures the Access Coordinator is aware of access needs to be provided and regularly checks in on satisfaction of access

  • Identify opportunities for growth to increase the number of deaf and hard of hearing students graduating with degrees in health care.

  • Works collaboratively with CHST departments and premed advisors to provide ongoing support for deaf and hard-of-hearing students

  • Works collaboratively with the Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses to ensure mutual success of mentorship programming

  • Provides support to the other mentorship programs within the Deaf Hub as needed.

  • Provides outreach and mentoring to students aspiring for a career in health care.

Operations and supervision:

  • Supervises and supports Deaf Hub personnel to maintain operations: Access Coordinator & Interpreter, Healthcare Training Programs Interpreter, Science Training Programs Interpreter, Community Outreach Specialist, Marketing Communications Specialist, Financial Administrator, Statistician, Software Engineer

  • Assists the Executive Director with annual budget planning and in the absence of the Executive Director, signs off on budget requests.

Promote externally funded research at the Deaf Hub:

  • Share relevant calls for proposals with Deaf Hub personnel

  • Propose, co-write, and lead research with the Executive Director, particularly for grants promoting DEI and mentorship

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Advanced degree: MS in Public Health, Psychology, Health Sciences, or related fields

  • 5+ years’ experience managing teams

  • 2+ years’ experience working in biomedical or behavioral science laboratories

Skills:

  • Proficiency in a sign language is required, coupled with an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of DHH individuals.

  • Experience working with the Deaf community on projects with health and/or behavioral focus.

  • Demonstrated communication skills (draft, edit, prepare, proofread, and present information).

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively handle all internal and external constituents.

  • Ability to work independently and identify opportunities for growth of Deaf Hub.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred terminal degree (PhD, MD, EDd, PharmD, etc. in related discipline)

Deaf Hub: The Deaf Health Care and Biomedical Science Hub (Deaf Hub) aims to improve the healthcare training experience through mentoring students and professionals, to increase universal access in the health system by working with the community of health professionals, and to strive for better health of deaf and hard-of-hearing people informed by research. The Deaf Hub works towards the long-term goal of increasing the number of deaf and hard-of-hearing people entering health care and biomedical science careers.

The Deaf Hub achieves its goals in six categories by:

  • Mentoring deaf and hard-of-hearing students interested in a career in health care or biomedical science.

  • Supporting the continued success of existing biomedical and healthcare conferences for deaf and hard-of-hearing trainees and professionals.

  • Providing professional development and training opportunities for healthcare professionals.

  • Improving the health care and biomedical knowledge and sign language skills of American Sign Language interpreters.

  • Developing health systems employers' awareness of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals as qualified for a career in health care and biomedical science, including how they can be hired and successfully integrated into the healthcare workforce.

  • Supporting the dissemination of accessible content to help healthcare professionals work efficiently with their deaf and hard-of-hearing patients.

Job Summary:

The Associate Director will be responsible for supporting the enduring success of the Deaf Hub. This will be done in various ways, including overseeing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, assisting with the Deaf Hub’s mentorship programs, supervising the Deaf Hub operations and finance, and leading externally funded research with the Executive Director. The Associate Director will work closely with and report to the Executive Director of the Deaf Hub.
