University of Rochester Automation Pharmacy Technician Specialist (Bailey Road) in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

As a pharmacy technician completing all requirements for licensure as a registered pharmacy technician, in accordance with New York State Education Law, performs duties consistent with medication compounding. These responsibilities include assisting pharmacists by compounding, preparing, labelling, and dispensing of medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Requirements for training and ongoing competency are consistent with NYS Education Law and USP standards. May also perform tasks unrelated to compounding to assist pharmacists in accordance with laws and regulations. When performing medication compounding tasks, a pharmacist shall not obtain assistance by more than two registered pharmacy technicians. (New York State Education Law Article 137-A).

A minimum of 40% of shifts on average should be scheduled in compounding areas that include tasks requiring licensure as defined by NYS law or in a function determined by the Department of Pharmacy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Use of Technology:

  • Appropriate use and maintenance of technology and equipment utilizing in compounding processes including workflow devices, robotics, and computer software.

  • Identifies problems and provides basic troubleshooting skills to maintain operation of technology to ensure the highest level of safety in the compounding process.

  • Maintains understanding of eRecord functions, including accessing rate information to provide calculations for required volume production.

  • Effectively utilizes information resources related to compounding processes including master formulations, compounding records, etc.

Compounding Procedure and Process:

  • Demonstrates competency I selecting appropriate products or devices for compounding processes.

  • Familiar with and follows all departmental Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to compounding processes.

  • Follows processes that demonstrate compliance with USP standards, including USP chapters <795>, <797>, <800>, including but not limited to assigning appropriate Beyond Use Date (BUD), storage of medications including hazardous medications, proper garbing procedures and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), proper aseptic technique and processes, cleaning and disinfecting, etc.

  • Utilizes specialized compounding technique related to specific medication preparation requirements.

  • Able to anticipate patient compounding needs based on orders or information provided to the compounding area.

  • Understands and follows required procedures for storage and disposal of controlled substances, pharmaceutical waste, blood/plasma containing products and hazardous materials.

  • Identifies and reports any safety concerns in the compounding processes to pharmacists and/or supervisor as appropriate.

  • Implements plans related to reduction of waste within the compounding area(s).

  • Understands and follows quarantine and sterility testing procedures as defined in USP standards for compounded medications and extended BUDs.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Able to complete other assigned tasks appropriate for certified pharmacy technicians, including but not limited to: medication order fulfillment, restocking areas, re-packaging of medications, answering and triaging telephone calls, medications delivery, and use of other technology integrated into the medication use system.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Environmental Quality and Compliance:

  • Participates in and reinforces environmental monitoring and compliance required by USP standards.

  • Demonstrates appropriate infection prevention processes and techniques.

  • Demonstrates and implements mitigating strategies related to protecting oneself and environment in handling medications, including hazardous medications.

  • Understands and maintains USP and Joint Commission compliance related to compounding oversight and quality standards.

Training and Competency:

  • Complete and comprehend all assigned educational materials specific to compounding, including ASHP training videos on Aseptic Technique, Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs and Non-Sterile Compounding (if applicable).

  • Complete comprehensive Technician Training and Competency Assessment Tool which includes verbal review, assigned reading material, observation/demonstration, verbal and written testing.

  • Successful completion and evidence of compliance for all aseptic skills tests required including periodic recertification.

  • Successful completion and passing score for required written compounding exam including re-examination assignments.

  • Complete technology re-assessment and recertification as required (e.g., IV Workflow, robotics, TPN compounder, etc.).

  • Other ongoing training/competency as assigned, including non-compounding technician duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Received an education, including high school graduation required

  • All departmental required education for compounding services

  • 3 years’ experience preferred

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience required

  • Be at least eighteen years of age at the time of application required

  • Be of good moral character including application of IICARE values required

  • Complete ASHP accredited training program or equivalent experience as a pharmacy technician required

  • Certification from a nationally accredited pharmacy technician certification program (Currently PTCB) and maintain ongoing education requirements required

Pay Range

Pay Range: $23.52 - $32.92 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
