Position: Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Purpose: The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is responsible for leading and implementing efforts that promote a culture of inclusion, equity, and belonging within the school community. This Cabinet-level position plays a critical role in fostering an environment where all students and staff feel valued, supported, and able to thrive. This position will report directly to the Superintendent of Schools.

Compensation/Pay Range*:$105,000 based on experience

Schedule*: Full-time 12-month

Essential Functions:

  • Serves as leader for the District’s Equity Team.

  • Implements, reviews, and updates DEI strategies in alignment with the district’s goals, ensuring equity is integrated across all facets of district functions.

  • Consults on and co-facilitates work of District and Building Equity Teams.

  • Builds strong and collaborative partnerships across diverse stakeholder groups to develop and support equity and inclusion efforts.

  • Acts as the primary point of contact for local and statewide community partnerships, including but not limited to Regional Equity Network (REN), The Children’s Institute, Community Schools, and other relevant organizations.

  • Promotes efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion across the District to support the needs of each student, celebrating their uniqueness, and creating a safe and welcoming learning environment.

  • Develops and implements intentional systems across all buildings, departments, and the greater school community that ensure everyone is valued and part of an inclusive organization.

  • In partnership with the Office of Student Support Services, supports an ongoing and consistent approach to restorative practices in the classroom, building, and throughout the District.

  • In partnership with the Office of Student Support Services, identifies practices that lead to disproportionate outcomes and offer recommendations and support to district and building administrators and staff to address and mitigate these practices.

  • In partnership with the Office of Instruction, manages and assists with faculty and staff professional learning to support growth, ensure access and equity, and positively impact instructional practices, including co-leading the District’s ongoing CR-SE trainings.

  • In partnership with the Office of Human Resources, works collaboratively in developing and evaluating structures to ensure equity in staff recruitment, hiring, support, retention.

  • In partnership with the Office of Instruction, works collaboratively in evaluating and selecting curricular materials that support all students' growth and opportunities to learn.

  • In partnership with the Business Office, assists with aspects of the budget pertaining to access and equity.

  • In partnership with the Communications Department, works collaboratively in developing and evaluating communications for representation and accessibility.

  • Assists schools in examining their data to understand patterns in performance and school culture by various subgroups.

  • Acts as a key resource on research and best practices to target strategies that better serve diverse students.

  • Assists in the response to issues and inquiries from district staff, students, and parents/guardians regarding educational equity for the purpose of identifying the relevant issues and recommending or implementing a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current best practices educational pedagogy.

  • Knowledge of school curriculum and concepts.

  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education, staff and students.

  • Knowledge of the Gates Chili Strategic Plan for Equity and the goals of the district.

  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and families.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance, professional growth and cultural awareness.

  • Ability to engage culturally diverse staff, students and families.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications Profile:

Certification/License, Education & Experience:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful professional employment experience in education or related field, with at least two (2) years of prior administrative experience preferred.

  • Completion of Masters Program with degree in education administration, human resources, organizational systems, mental health, communications and/or other related field.

  • Successful experience in working with a diverse community.

  • Experience in working with Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), Responsive Practices, Restorative Justice and Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-SE).

  • Valid New York State certification as a School District Administrator (SDA) or Civil Service Title.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Demands, Hazards:Works in standard office and school building environments.

Equipment:Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel:Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
