Description

The Department of Pathology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine/Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Rochester NY is seeking an Academic Hematopathologist. Candidates must hold an MD, MD-PhD, or equivalent, be board certified/eligible in hematopathology and have expertise in morphologic diagnosis of lymphoma and leukemia. Board eligibility/certification in anatomic and/or clinical pathology, as well as hematopathology (having completed a 1-year ACGME fellowship), and eligibility for licensure in the State of New York are required.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the position will ideally have a strong academic component, to include translational or clinical research. Candidates with specialized expertise in ancillary laboratory/diagnostic specialties related to hematopathology (e.g. flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, or benign hematology) are particularly encouraged to apply, as leadership opportunities in such areas could be available for interested candidates. The anticipated rank is open, commensurate with experience.

Applicants will have the opportunity to participate in clinical and basic science research projects, but are not required to do so. The Medical Center has a highly collegial environment. There are multiple opportunities for collaborative research, particularly with investigators in the Wilmot Cancer Institute (WCI), which supports a prominent and nationally recognized leukemia/lymphoma oncology service. The successful candidate will actively participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the diagnosis of hematologic malignancies.

The Hematopathology Unit supports all aspects of clinical laboratory studies for adult and pediatric hematology including bone marrow transplant services at WCI, the inpatient tertiary care centers of SMH and the Golisano Children’s Hospital, and as a laboratory referral center for wide network of outpatient hematology clinics. There is a close working relationship with the clinical lymphoma and leukemia programs as well as productive research laboratories. All would welcome the collaboration of this recruit, providing great opportunities for career development. Ample opportunity for teaching is also available with two ACGME-accredited hematopathology fellowship positions, continually rotating pathology residents and medical students, opportunities for medical school teaching, and even undergraduate and/or summer high school enrichment.

With more than one million people in the metropolitan area, Rochester, NY offers all the cultural, recreational, and educational amenities of a large city, but with nearby open spaces and lakes providing options for lifestyles from urban to rural, all with easy commutes. Rochester has been highly ranked for “quality of life” and recently as one of the "Top 10 U.S. Cities to Raise a Family".

Applicants should apply online at http://www.rochester.edu/jobopp, and forward their cover letter and curriculum vitae to Dr. Christa Whitney-Miller, Interim Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, c/o Amanda Herman at amanda_herman@urmc.rochester.edu.

Post-offer health assessments and drug testing is required to be performed on-site.
