The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Performs complex laboratory assignments, planning and conducting experiments of limited scope or a portion of a larger and more diverse project. Leads tasks associated with research activities and lab support for lower-level technicians. Serves as unit operations liaison to ensure compliance with departmental or University policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Ensures accountability and stewardship of University resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures

Responsibilities

General Purpose:

This position requires active participation in research laboratory activities. This individual will participate in basic science laboratory procedures including routine experiments using both cell culture and transgenic mouse models of erythropoiesis. Research will require experience with cell culture, mouse breeding/genotyping, FACS analyses, polymerase chain reaction, cloning techniques, tissue culture procedures, and fluorescent antibody detection. This position will involve the generation and maintenance of cell lines, handling mice, and analyzing erythropoiesis in cell culture and animal models.

Responsibilities:

Cell culture

  • Culture mouse and human erythroblasts, including monitoring of cultures using benzidine and trypan counts

  • Generate and maintain cell lines for analyses using Crispr genome editing

  • Genotype cell lines

  • Analyze cultures using flow cytometric analyses

Molecular Biology

  • Generate guide RNAs for Crispr experiments

  • Design and perform cloning of constructs as directed

  • Screen colonies generated via genome editing experiments using qPCR and western blot

  • Assay mRNA and protein levels using qPCR and Western blot, respectively

Research Laboratory Procedures

  • Organizing the work stations with the necessary supplies, including assembling any necessary plastic ware

  • Cell staining and counting for flow cytometry experiments

  • Performing routine laboratory analyses including (but not limited to) RT-PCR, western blot, immunofluorescence, cell culture, and microscopy.

  • Routine cleaning of instrumentation and work area per protocol

  • Restocking of work station supplies and ordering of supplies

Animal Procedures

  • Assist with genotyping and colony maintenance

Participate in lab meetings and journal clubs.

  • Keeping current in the field through pertinent seminars and literature.

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • BS/BA in biological/physical science or equivalent experience is preferred.

  • A minimum of 1-year experience in laboratory science desired. Individuals with experience in handling mice and/or cytometry and cell culture are encouraged to apply required. Knowledge of University policy and procedures is desirable. Must have reliable/efficient transportation preferred.
