Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Associate Controller, the Senior Financial Analyst is instrumental in supporting external and internal financial reporting and analysis of the University. This position requires discretion and judgment and is responsible for handling a variety of confidential and time sensitive materials. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prepare the University’s financial statements and Schedule of Federal Expenditures, and maintain technical proficiency in the research and application of U.S. generally accepted accounting principles and OMB Uniform Guidance.

  • Prepare the University’s tax filings including Form 990, 990-T, CT-13, applicable state returns, 990-N, NYS sales tax, and Monroe County occupancy tax.

  • Provide support to the University’s cash management and budget functions by acting as the primary backup for daily cash reconciliations and developing budgets for certain budget lines.

  • Support the ongoing management of the University’s financial projection and analysis model.

  • Prepare external financial surveys required by Federal, State, and credit agencies on behalf of the University.

  • Perform periodic reconciliation and analysis (monthly, quarterly, annually) of several general ledger accounts.

  • Develop and perform analyses relative to enrollment, revenue and expense statistical data, including variance analysis on these items.

  • Reconcile construction in progress accounts.

    Essential Functions

Preparation and analysis for external financial reporting:

  • Prepare preliminary and fiscal year-end financial statements to support the University’s Financial Statement Audit.

  • Prepare the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards to support the University’s Single Audit. – Prepare tax filings for the University including, but not limited to, Form 990, 990-T, CT-13, applicable other state returns, 990-N, NYS sales tax, and Monroe County occupancy tax.

  • Prepare the University’s annual bond disclosure document.

  • Prepare financial surveys required by Federal, State, and credit agencies including, but not limited to: IPEDS , Middle States, U.S. News & World Report, NCAA , EADA , NYS Vendor Responsibility Questionnaire, S&P reports, and Moody’s reports.

  • Ensure the University’s compliance with tax laws and regulations including those regarding unrelated business income taxation and related reporting and international tax issues.

  • Calculate and negotiate the University’s Federal indirect cost rate.

  • Provide support and analysis during bond issues and/or rating agency reviews as needed.

Preparation, reconciliation and analysis for internal financial analysis and reporting:

  • Reconcile construction in progress accounts with the Associate Controller and Financial and Accounts Payable Analyst.

  • Calculate depreciation expense budgets and projections and prepare the capital expenditure analysis.

  • Work with the Office of Research, Scholarship and Innovation to reconcile grant accounts. – Prepare financial and budget analyzes of university revenue and expenses.

  • Work with the Associate Controller and Director of Endowment and Treasury Operations in the management of the University’s financial projection model:

  • Update budget and financial statement data in the model on a periodic basis.

  • Build reports and dashboards that can be shared with the Vice President for Finance & Administration, Cabinet and the Board of Trustees.

  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations for certain general ledger accounts.

  • Primary backup to reconcile daily cash and ensure corresponding journal entries are recorded.

  • Primary backup to initiate wire transfers – Special projects as assigned.

  • Primary backup for the fixed asset accounting system including communicating the University’s fixed asset policy and ensuring assets are appropriately tagged.

  • Primary backup to reconcile fixed asset accounts monthly and record the disposition of any assets throughout the year.

    Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

  • BS in Accounting or related field.

  • Minimum of three years of related work experience in a professional environment.

  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills and intermediate skills in Word and PowerPoint.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and be able to attend to and prioritize projects.

  • Ability to successfully manage interpersonal working relationships.

  • As appropriate, collaborate with staff in other units and divisions to achieve the goals of the University.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Handles confidential information sensitively and appropriately.

    Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

  • CPA preferred.

  • Higher education or non-profit experience preferred.

  • Ellucian Colleague System and/or Synario Projection Software experience.
