Robert Half Payroll Accountant in Rockford, Illinois

Description We are seeking a Staff Accountant to join our team in Rockford, Illinois. This role involves performing a wide variety of payroll, accounting, auditing, and financial record management tasks, ensuring timely and accurate compliance with government regulations and best practices. The individual will be required to maintain complex payroll, fiscal, and related records, and perform assigned duties where professional accounting skills are required.

Responsibilities:

• Manage, maintain, and review payroll and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.

• Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.

• Prepare and issue W-2 and W-3 forms, and other documents required by state and federal law in conjunction with the payroll system.

• Administer departmental invoicing process via the financial software of record, ensuring that accounts payable invoices are accurately entered and confirming correct accounting practices are followed in the processing and payment of invoices.

• Assist in maintaining and reconciling a complete set of accounts including subsidiary ledger, general ledger, and budgetary and control accounts; allocate shared costs to cost centers; prepare and analyze trial balance and monthly and yearly financial statements and reports.

• Assist in maintaining and monitoring project expenses including capital improvement (CIP) expenses to ensure proper coding, accurate reporting, and conformance with generally accepted accounting principles.

• Ensure accurate input of general ledger postings by coding journal entries and reviewing account coding before data entry.

• Balance and deposit cash receipts; enter data as needed to updated accounts and files; search for and identify discrepancies and adjust accounts appropriately; distribute receipts to proper funds; prepare bank deposits.

• Assist in the preparation of comprehensive annual financial statements; administer the reconciliation of accounts.

• Assist with the preparation of various work papers, schedules, and financial statements in advance of financial audits by external independent auditors.

• Record and maintain fixed asset accounts; maintain all accounting records, and assist with annual physical audit, and prepare reconciliation schedules and analysis for year-end financial audit.

• Assist with the development and implementation and maintenance of financial software applications. Requirements • Proficiency in Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR)

• Experience with Bank Reconciliations

• Familiarity with General Ledger and Journal Entries

• Ability to handle Month End Close procedures

• Knowledge of NetSuite, Oracle, QuickBooks, and SAP

• Experience in Payroll and Payroll processes in unionized settings

• Experience working in Public Sector Organizations

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

• Ability to multitask and meet deadlines

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
