Position Summary:

As a production chemist, you will work on multi-step organic synthesis, purification and formulation from milligram scale up to 300-gallon scale. The production chemist will always keep Safety, Quality and the Customer as a top priority to achieve production goals.

The Organic Synthesis team manufactures many cross-linking compounds and reagents as well as partners with the R&D team to add new products to the organic synthesis portfolio. We are a productive and motivated team looking for an additional hardworking member that can help promote a diverse and inclusive environment. The successful candidate will perform daily laboratory work needed in the synthesis process such as column chromatography, distillation, rotary evaporation, purification, and filtration as well as perform analysis of compounds and reactions mixtures using HPLC, GC, UV/VIS, FTIR, NMR, TLC, pH, IR.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support production goals relative to Safety, Quality, Customer and Cost while driving daily production work orders to completion.

  • Document procedures, complete and review Manufacturing Batch Records, and maintaining any experimental design within a lab notebook.

  • Employ safe chemical handling techniques, use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (including a respirator when required) and safe collection and bulk handling of hazardous waste according to site policies.

  • Capable of routinely using moderately heavy equipment such as drum carts, gas cylinders, mobile balances and filled containers or drums.

  • Assist production within the different scale organic synthesis laboratories: small (milligram), medium (10+ liters) and large (10+ gallon).

  • Ability to assemble, disassemble, and ensure accurate use of equipment, apparatuses, reaction vessels, rotary evaporators, vacuum ovens, etc.

  • Participate and/or lead in root cause counter measure analysis, detail the investigation, and handle the associated nonconformance deviation.

  • Able to work well on a cross-functional team for projects such as: new product or process development, process improvements, test method optimization, process scale-ups, cost reduction and safety improvements.

  • Be an active member of the team, seeking and accepting laboratory responsibilities to maintain and improve the workplace, in addition to helping train and/or mentor less proficient staff.

  • Help to maintain the preventative maintenance schedule by completing assigned work orders.

  • Maintain a clean laboratory and workspace by applying 5S and Lean tools.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • B.S in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience is preferred.

  • Detailed understanding of chemistry at the undergraduate level required. Experience with general laboratory techniques including distillation, filtration, closed transfer, purification, reaction chemistry and crystallization preferred.

  • Experience with analysis techniques such as HPLC, GC, UV/VIS, FTIR, NMR, TLC, pH, IR.

  • Capable of multi-tasking and having strong time-management skills to meet a demanding work schedule is required.

  • Proficient in PC applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Knowledge of Minitab, MRP, and/or Chemdraw is a plus.

  • Flexible to work an off-shift or weekend when needed.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate within a diverse group.

  • Associates may generate and handle hazardous waste as defined by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Individuals in this position are required to receive initial hazardous waste training within the first 30 working days of assignment.

  • The initial waste training shall include but not be limited to the following general categories: identifying hazardous and solid waste, hazardous waste management, recycling, treatment and disposal, emergency preparedness and record keeping and pollution prevention and waste reduction.
