GAP Solutions Inc Process Chemist in Rockville, Maryland
Position Objective: Provide services as a Process Chemist in support of the overall functions of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The purpose of this position is to possess a deep knowledge of scale-up and process chemistry skills for the development of safe and scalable synthetic routes, with early and late-phase development experience and delivering drug substances under tight timelines.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform bulk-synthesis, purification and formulation efforts for advanced testing in animal models. 3
Perform chemical and biochemical reactions and appropriate analytical analyses. 5
Design and develop safe and scalable processes for organic compounds of specicific therapeutic targets 1
Purify organic compounds using a variety of techniques including chromatography, extraction, distillation, crystallization, trituration,etc. 4
Synthesize key intermediates and drug substances from gram to kilogram scale. 2
Perform general maintenance and upkeep of equipment and instrumentation.
Troubleshoot and provide routine maintenance of the instruments and equipment.
Identify the cause of common problems and mistakes and make necessary repairs.
Documents and analyzes results, produces detailed summaries and reports.
Write papers and abstracts detailing research efforts and results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Maintain up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments.
Collect and review data; analyze and interpret data and results.
Produce research reports and communicate results.
Search chemical databases for journal articles, patents and related technologies.
Manage bulk-synthesis, purification and formulation efforts for advanced testing in animal models.
Work with staff in identity, purity and stability analysis.
Analyze and characterize organic compounds using state-of-the art analytical technologies;
Purify compounds by preparative chromatography from chemists.

Develop and document new procedures.
Develop novel chemistry methodologies and technologies that advance the field and make recommendations.
Collaborate with staff to evaluate and/or develop new techniques.
Perform comparative studies with older technology. Perform evaluations to determine new guidelines.
Develop and present plans for novel syntheses and approaches to new compounds.
Develop experimental procedures and research protocols.
Train staff on new experiments, practices, operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment and safety practices.
Train junior laboratory staff in the design and execution of proper chemical/biochemical protocols.
Maintain and perform training on scientific instrumentation and equipment.
Work with staff on all mandatory training and competency assessments.
Organize and mentor staff in the use of instrumentation.
Work with facilities manager on evacuation procedures and drills.
Develop and document new procedures.

Maintain records or quarterly safety inspections.
Coordinate laboratory and network obligations.
Design synthetic routes to target molecules.
Synthesize, purify and characterize target molecules.
Provide chemistry support for multiple projects.
Present research findings at group meetings, project meetings and conferences.
Coordinate projects being developed by external collaborators, propose SAR strategies and monitor their progress.
Perform a variety of chemical techniques and advanced analysis to complete studies and experiments.

Search chemical databases for journal articles, patents and related technologies.
Write papers and abstracts detailing research efforts and results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Prepare summaries, reports and presentations based on findings.
Contribute to publications and patent writing.
Produce research reports and regularly communicate results.

Basic Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Chemistry or a related field of study.
Certified in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
Skilled in process development and scale-up synthesis, chromatography (HPLC, GC. etc), nuclear magnetic resonance, equipment maintenance, and manuscript writing.
Skilled in MS Office, E-Notebook, Chemdraw, and MestReNova.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
