Humana Environmental Sustainability Lead in Sacramento, California

The Environmental Sustainability Lead develops, implements, and manages workplace strategies and programs focused on developing Humana’s sustainability strategy and goals to help promote a healthier workplace environment and planet. Key areas of focus include:

• Developing Sustainable Practices: Design and implement long-term sustainable strategies that align with corporate goals.

• Regulatory Compliance: Stay current on government regulations and work in partnership with key stakeholders to ensure company practices meet /exceed mandated standards.

• Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including suppliers, customers, and regulatory agencies on sustainability efforts.

• Data Management and Reporting: Monitor sustainability metrics and develop reports for senior leaders outlining the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives. ADD: Oversight of voluntary and mandatory reporting.

The Environmental Sustainability Lead oversees and facilitates Humana’s internal and external environmental impact and communicates the organization's sustainability vision and program information. This role plays a pivotal role in helping the organization identify sustainability goals and leading Humana to achieving those goals. This role supports board approved initiatives which address the organizations approach to environmental responsibility with the goal to minimize the company's environmental impact. This role will be responsible for managing the company’s Science Based Target roadmap and accountable for the timely delivery of initiatives tied to those targets.

Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high level of expertise in environmental policies and corporate sustainability, possess excellent organizational and project management skills, and exhibit strong leadership qualities. Proven experience in sustainability program implementation within a corporate setting is required. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Create and communicate a clear sustainability strategy for the corporation. This involves conducting sustainability assessments, identifying material issues, setting goals and targets, and developing action plans and indicators.

  • Develop, implement and monitor sustainability policies, programs and initiatives that align with Humana's ESG platform and initiatives.

  • Ensure the strategy is aligned with the company’s overall business objectives, as well as with relevant standards, frameworks and regulations, such as the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi), Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), California Climate Bill.

  • Ensure sustainability program processes and operations compliance with environmental and governmental regulations.

  • Monitor, report, and evaluate effectiveness of sustainability program implementations.

  • Align proposals for sustainability projects with factors such as cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and integration with other initiatives.

  • Manage internal / external reporting as required.

  • Vendor management of external strategic partnerships and associated contracts.

  • Manage strategic relationships with suppliers and other stakeholders and leverage these relationships towards conducting successful sustainability projects.

  • Manage corporate sustainability risk assessments.

  • Proposes and implements strategies to address various environmental concerns including energy use, conservation, reduction of pollution, recycling, building and facility design, and general education on sustainability.

  • Evaluates efficacy of sustainability programs, policies and processes, and recommends and implements improvements as necessary.

  • Conducts research to identify environmental and sustainability concerns, interests, and issues.

  • Considers sustainability proposals with attention to factors such as cost effectiveness, feasibility, and ease of integration with other programs.

  • Drafts and prepares reports, presentations, and proposals; presents proposals and recommendations to senior leaders and key stakeholders.

  • Prepares documentation required for project funding for various environmental initiatives including proposals and grant applications.

  • Maintains current working knowledge of, and ensures compliance with, all applicable local, state, federal, and internal environmental laws and regulations.

  • Identifies and facilitates training as needed.

  • Relationship-building skills to form meaningful relationships and connections with different stakeholders, suppliers, partners, and leaders.

  • Manage energy procurement in deregulated markets.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, business management, or a related field

  • 5+years of experience in corporate sustainability

  • Deep understanding of SBTi, RECs, Renewable Energy programs, general understanding of certifications such as Energy Star, LEED, etc.

  • Experience or formal training in GHG Protocol and other common sustainability reporting frameworks(GRI, SASB, TCFD SBTi)

  • Demonstrated experience working with Vendor management of external strategic partnerships and associated contracts.

  • Ability to create, interpret, and execute a budget (vendors, projects, etc.).

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s in Environmental Management or Sustainable Businesses, or related field

Work-At-Home Requirements:

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.

$102,200 - $140,700 per year

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
