City of Safety Harbor Fleet Mechanic in Safety Harbor, Florida

Must have the following in order to apply:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent , supplemented by two (2) years of experience as a heavy equipment, automotive, or diesel mechanic; experience in small engine repair; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Possession and maintenance of ASE Certification and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification required, or must obtain within eighteen (18) months from date of hire
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License, with Tanker Endorsement. No Valid CDL with endorsement(s) CDL Permit within six (6) months from date of hire, and valid CDL with endorsements within eighteen (18) months from date of hire. Employees without a valid CDL and endorsements on their date of hire will serve an extended probation until the valid CDL and endorsements are obtained, to include necessary training and classroom time and will not exceed eighteen (18) months from date of hire
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the mechanics trade
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Must follow written and verbal instructions

Required Screenings: Drug Testing/Screening; Background Checks; Reference Checks; Motor Vehicle Record Check; Drug Free Workplace.

Job Description: Under supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, or designee. Performs mechanic work in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, construction equipment, and engines in the Fleet Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department, in accordance with all applicable City codes and Departmental policies. Work is reviewed through observations and obtained results.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs repair and reconditioning of construction and automotive equipment such as automobiles, trucks, and other specialized fuel-powered equipment to maintain the City's fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Rebuilds and performs the work on engines; inspects and repairs transmissions, universal joints, and differentials.
  • Performs maintenance and repair of heavy equipment.
  • Grinds valves.
  • Performs burning and welding as required.
  • Performs emergency road service to all City equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains records of daily assignments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment: Works in a garage and outside; Will be discussed with applicant.
