Position Overview:

Ensures the safe handling of prescription medications and medication administration, including the acquiring, administering, storing and disposal of prescription and over-the-counter medications, and the education, observation and assessment of the clients' receiving medications for adverse reactions. Supports the Medical Team by assisting with clinics, documentation, and transportation of clients to and from medical appointments as needed and any other duty necessary to assist in care of the youth.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

  • Review and follow all Medication Administration policy and procedures.
  • Stay current on all training that supports positive and therapeutic interactions with the youth.
  • Support co-workers on the units in caring for the youth as necessary, particularly during emergencies.
  • Review of current prescription medications administered within the facility.
  • Know the biological principles associated with pharmacotherapy.
  • Be aware of side effects and adverse effects of the prescription medications.
  • Be knowledgeable of prescription medications and practice for pregnant teens and female adolescents of childbearing age.
  • Follow The "9 Rights" to the prescription medication administration procedures.
  • Follow Reporting requirements regarding medication errors, refusal to take prescription medications (non- adherence) and managing a medical emergency.
  • Follow observation and administering practices; and guidelines and protocols to promote state-of-the- art pharmacotherapy with physician coordination.
  • All Medication Administrators will complete Initial and Annual Medication Administration Training which will be documented and recorded in the coworker file.
  • Assure all scheduled prescription medications are maintained in a locked medication cart specifically designed for medication storage. The medication cart shall be maintained in the identified room that is secured specifically for the cart and medication administration. Only prescription and non-prescription medications are to be stored in the medication cart along with supplies for med passing.
  • Assure all medications that have been discontinued, contaminated, or refused are destroyed weekly with appropriate documentation according to policy.

Secondary Duties

Secondary duties of the med passer include but are not limited to the following:

  • Attending psychiatric clinic, medical clinic, and dental clinic to assist in transportation of youth and documentation of medication changes, as necessary.
  • Transporting youth to and from medical appointments according to the policies and procedures of Transportation.
  • Assist the Medical Liaison with entering and submitting documents into Carelogic for appropriate record keeping according to policy.
  • Maintain supplies in First Aid Kits on each unit weekly including emergency medications per protocol with appropriate documentation of restocking and ordering necessary emergency meds as needed.
  • All other duties that support the smooth operation of the Medical Team.
