Job Description

AECOM’s Water Infrastructure Team is looking for a highly driven Civil Engineer. This is a hybrid position.

The Water Business Line brings together the skills of project managers, civil engineers, H&H engineers, geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and environmental and planning specialists to provide integrated, sustainable and cost-effective solutions. Projects include flood risk reduction systems, dams, levees, floodwalls and floodgates, water supply, tunnels/trenchless technology, roads water/wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, pipe networks, sewerage, and outfalls.

This position would be responsible for assisting with the preparation of Civil/Site Drawings, supporting Calculations and Specifications. The selected candidate would assist with conceptualizing design and coordinating the flow of technical documents (drawings, specifications, quantities, and cost) between interfacing engineering disciplines.

Our clients include private, local, federal and global organizations, including water utilities and drainage authorities throughout the United States. This position would mostly work on federal projects for clients like, USACE, USIBWC, FEMA, NRCS, etc. Project types include horizontal, heavy earthwork design, like improvements to or new dams, levees, floodwalls, channels, etc. Additional project types include drainage, pipeline and collection stormwater facility design, tunnel design, planning, and construction management.

Job Duties:

  • Work as the project engineer on heavy civil flood control projects and provides technical support for a variety of civil design related projects.

  • Responsible for assisting and/or leading the preparation and successful completion of construction package deliverables (design drawings, specifications, cost estimates, alternatives analysis, technical memoranda, and design documentation reports), depending on project size and complexity.

  • Generate layouts/designs or dams, levees, floodwalls, floodgates, channels, culverts, headwalls, detention ponds, operating ponds, spillways, rock drains, and haulage/access/circulation roads. Designs incorporate erosion control features, geosynthetics, and exposed or sub-surface piping.

  • Complete quantity and cost estimates, as well as alternative assessments.

  • Prepare drafts of portions of technical proposals, reports, regulatory agency permits, as well as less complex external and internal documents.

  • Develop alignments, 3D models (BIMs), cross sections, plan sets, visual aids, etc using Bentley OpenRoads and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Design channels and energy dissipation structures that include concrete, riprap, articulated concrete block, fabric-formed concrete, and baffle blocks for erosion control

  • Coordinate and integrate civil design with results from geotechnical, structural, mechanical, and electrical designs.

  • Develop tangible engineering design skills through periodic field experience. This may include construction support (verification of design implementation, adherence to quality, contractor/owner engagement), site inspections, and geotechnical investigations. Also provide construction support from the office by adapting designs to field conditions.

  • Produce technical calculations to high standards of quality using current computer software.

  • Assist with the preparation of technical specifications.

  • Utilize standard techniques, procedures, and criteria while gaining understanding of advanced methods

  • Coordinates multi-discipline design efforts; work closely with the project team, including civil, geotechnical, H&H engineers, structural engineers, and surveyors to provide value to each project

  • Assists with the development of engineering budget and schedule to meet requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • Valid Driver’s License required

Preferred Qualifications:

To be successful in this role we would like to hear from candidates with the following;

  • 8 to 12 years of experience as a Civil Engineer

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related engineering field from an ABET accredited institution.

  • Professional Engineer license in state of residence.

  • Strong technical progression within Civil Engineering and Design

  • Mid- to Senior-level proficiency in civil engineering design and analysis, including BIM development for heavy earthwork design projects, site design, grading and drainage design, water line and sewer design, stormwater permitting and design, and erosion and sediment control

  • Proficiency with Bentley OpenRoads and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D and experience in other design software (Bentley Design Suites, Water CAD, Sewer CAD, GEOPAK, ARC GIS, etc)

  • An understanding of how plans and specifications should be developed and used during construction.

  • Experience with cost estimating and quantity takeoffs for an engineer’s estimate.

  • Ability to work on multiple ongoing projects at the same time

  • Willing to work overtime if needed to complete a task to meet the client’s schedule or request

  • Experience with USACE engineering/construction projects

Additional Information

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $115,000.00 - $135,000.00.
