Medical Interpreter I (Certified/Qualified)

LOCATION: West Salem Clinic - Medical

JOB STATUS: Full-Time, 1.0 FTE – 40 hours a week, Monday – Friday with rotating Saturdays

YOUR ROLE:

The Medical Interpreter interacts with all Care Teams. The Medical Interpreter is a qualified or certified individual who communicates information such as symptoms, medical history and diagnosis between patients and medical professionals when there is a language barrier. The Medical Interpreter contributes to maintaining the patient's health care record through careful, accurate and complete documentation of the elements under their responsibility. The Medical Interpreter works with the medical staff to provide comprehensive, quality, and accessible health care services to the communities of Marion and Polk Counties. SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Professionally communicates information such as symptoms, medical history, and diagnoses between patients and medical professionals when there is a language barrier. Communicates with empathy and compassion and uses appropriate language when speaking with patients/clients; displays excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to think on your feet to quickly and accurately express complex ideas and concepts.

  • Exemplifies exceptional command of medical terminology in English and Spanish, or English and ASL while serving as a translator to patients and staff. This includes face to face office visits and telephone communications.

  • Actively engages in the teamwork model by seeking opportunities to assist and support the care team workflow throughout the day. Consistently communicates effectively in a professional manner with clients, staff, and providers.

  • Works proactively to determine when and where translation services will be necessary and coordinate efforts to be available to staff.

  • Participates in staff meetings, training sessions and supervision sessions. Makes a proactive effort to learn practices from knowledge-experts and colleagues when applicable and receives formal training.

  • Works as part of the health care team by assisting in the completion of an assortment of tasks as directed by supervisor and needs of the clinic.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent. College degree preferred.

  • Must be fluent in both English, Spanish and/or English and ASL with command of medical terminology.

  • Must be Certified or Qualified through Oregon Health Authority (OHA)

  • Ability to translate oral and written communication. Interpreter certification preferred.

  • Must interact effectively and courteously with patients and staff.

  • Valid Oregon Driver's License and proof of automobile insurance.
