Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Admissions and Advising, the Bilingual Academic Advisor I works as part of a team, advising a diverse population of students in the College of Social Work ( CSW ). The Bilingual Academic Advisor I is committed to academic advisement, student orientation/retention, transfer articulation, accommodations and enrollment services. The Bilingual Academic Advisor I will interpret and explain university academic policy and procedures to assist students in making decisions concerning their educational goals leading to graduation.

This position will assist the College and University in promoting a climate of respect and equity that cultivates and sustains transformative practices by forging spaces of possibility where people feel safe, valued, welcomed, and respects all students in their quest for individual success through degree programs, certificates, majors, etc.

Must be fluent in English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintain an advising caseload and meet with students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, major exploration, course planning and registration, transfer credit evaluation/substitution or

  2. Facilitate students’ academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs.

  3. Advises students using a variety of formats, including information sessions, face-to-face, phone, videoconferencing, chat, and email.

  4. Maintain students’ academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during each visit.

  5. Participate in the development and implementation of student recruitment and outreach efforts and student and parent orientation sessions.

  6. Use degree tracking software (i.e Degree Audit), record keeping systems (i.e., PeopleSoft), and advising related technologies (i.e., EAB Navigate, OnBase, Student Data Warehouse, CRM software, etc.) to monitor student progress.

  7. Actively participate and serve on College and University committees, including but not limited to: College Scholarship Committee, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Sustainability ( IDEAS ) Committee, University Academic Advising Community ( UAAC ) and Graduate Advisors Professional Association ( GAPA )—making recommendations that affect curriculum requirements, advising processes and program development and published materials.

  8. Represent office at campus-wide meetings and initiatives.

  9. Maintain current knowledge of University resources, critical dates, as well as policies and procedures for all students; assists with implementation, interpretation, and evaluation of new policies and procedures.

  10. Collect and disseminate information to students, staff, faculty, and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.

  11. Participate in local and national professional associations (i.e., National Academic Advising Association ( NACADA ) and National Association of Student Personnel Administrators ( NASPA ).

  12. May participate in search committees for new hires in College.

  13. Participate in programming communities for students within their area.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills
