Job Summary

Dr. Xiaoxu Yang’s lab at the Department of Human Genetics and the Utah Center for Genetic Discovery at the University of Utah is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar to work in the field of computational genomic medicine. The specific research topic would be regarding somatic and germline mosaic mutations of any types in the human genome, their detection and assessment, and/or using mosaicism as a tool to understand human development, diseases, and environmental impacts.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with a highly collaborative and cooperative research community within and beyond the Department of Human Genetics. The scholar will also have access to state-of-the-art sequencing technologies and develop cutting-edge scientific research in the field of mosaic genetics under the supervision of the PI and other faculty members to advance their career.

Dr. Xiaoxu Yang is a leading role in the field of mosaic genetics. With the first-control independent deep-learning tool DeepMosaic (Nat Biotech 2023), Dr. Yang and colleagues first reported the human age-independent clonal mosaic mutation stability in sperm (Cell 2021), left-right brain genetic differences (Nature 2022) as well as dual origin of cortical inhibitory neurons (Nature 2024). Dr. Yang’s Lab is powered by the Center for High Performance Computing ( CHPC )’s Notchpeak, Kingspeak, Lonepeak, and Redwood, with access to more than 1000 compute nodes comprising of more than 45,000 cores of high-performance computing and 2PB Yang Lab-dedicated high-performance luster storage and more than 40 PB of shared storage.

Responsibilities

Investigates standard system applications, prepares analysis of system specifications and program coding. Translates detailed design specifications into computer program instructions, debugs routine programs, conducts systems test data, prepares diagrams and over-all flow charts, prepares statements of programs objectives and associated documentation.

Conducts programming tasks including data manipulation, input and output routines reflecting a variety of equipment configurations. Coordinates the interfaces between major systems and programs. Responsible for Web design, maintenance and updates. Conducts studies of potential applications and prepares proposals to reflect costs, time and alternative actions to satisfy existing and future needs.

Develops operator and control instructions; maintains and updates existing programs of a non-routine nature. Conducts systems programming and support activities such as new or revised segments of language codes or processing. Work frequently includes program maintenance and error detection of existing codes/languages and revisions to systems documentation.Intermediate level.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). 2-5 years of programmer/analyst or related experience.
