Job Summary

Provides compliance related coding reviews and auditing of faculty and physician documentation. The position will utilize coding knowledge to abstract, record and audit data from medical records. Provides support to areas related to documentation, regulatory education and auditing.

Responsibilities

  1. Reviews safety related documentation and data within established systems to ensure compliance with applicable health and safety regulations. Reviews documentation internal and external to the department.

  2. Performs data entry into established database(s) in support of EHS operations

  3. Conducts processes related to internal department document control including but not limited to change tracking and management, revision management, website content verification, etc.

  4. Analyzes and mitigates complex, non-routine regulatory issues and workflow problems. Acts as a liaison between the University parties (PIs, regulatory team, inspection team, etc.) on issues pertaining to the department’s compliance procedures.

  5. Assists in the development of standard operating procedures and process improvements for departmental implementation and guidance for external associates.

  6. May assist with development of training/educational content related to the departmental compliance process.

  7. May assist with administrative tracking and reporting for department related sponsored projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration or a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); plus 2 years working experience with one of those years working in a compliance office. American Health Information Management ( AHIMA ) or American Academy of Professional Coders ( AAPC ) recognized certification such as: Certified Professional Coder ( CPC ), Certified Professional Coder-Hospital ( CPC -H) or a specific certification preferred by the Department.

Basic knowledge of clinical documentation requirements related to regulatory and reimbursement rules, the Medicare system and proficiency with computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Experience with University of Utah computer systems such as: Powerchart, Allegra, IDX , IDXRAD , Corporate Radar, Cognos, EPIC and ORMIS are highly preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
