Position Summary:

Audubon Rockies, a regional office of the National Audubon Society, is seeking a Land Manager for the Gillmor Sanctuary located on the shore of Great Salt Lake. The Land Manager will focus on the tasks and responsibilities associated with Sanctuary operations to include land management, maintenance, and adaptive management of a complicated wetland and upland ecosystem. They will serve as an ambassador for Gillmor Sanctuary helping raise awareness with government and elected officials and staff, adjacent land developers, key decision makers, and the general public through workshops, oral presentations, fieldtrips and written articles. The Land Manager will help drive and implement science-based conservation and a field based observational adaptive management for the Gillmor Sanctuary and Great Salt Lake, and potentially for other saline ecosystems.

 

Compensation:

$45,000 - $55,000 / year Essential Functions:

In coordination with the Conservation Specialist/Gillmor Sanctuary Manager the Land Manager will:

 

  • Assist with the development and implementation of an adaptive management strategy that focuses on migratory and breeding shorebird habitat at the sanctuary through day-to-day management of Gillmor Sanctuary, monitoring of land use and its impacts, monitoring of natural areas and observing ecological needs.

  • Learn existing water management activities and help develop and implement annual water management strategies that enhance/promote productive shorebird habitat, while controlling the spread of invasive vegetation.

  • Implement and document control measures for invasive/noxious weeds and keep noxious and invasive weed management program updated with current, ecologically acceptable practices and better understand invasive/noxious weed management including spraying, plant removal or other in-the field control methods.

  • Assist with the coordination and oversite of seasonal and intern programs and staff (field oversite).

  • Coordinate with local contractors to help implement restoration and management actions.

  • Assist with develop and maintain key relationships with partner organizations, other landowners, leases, easements, water master and other stakeholders.

  • Develop familiarity with the sanctuary's current and historical transactions including leases, easements, agreements, USACE 404 and other permits, property boundaries, property owner retained rights, greenbelt, tax exempt, roll back taxes, and legal and other restrictions etc. ensuring responsible land ownership by Audubon and compliance with neighboring landowners.

  • Understanding all ecosystem needs including water manipulation and response by plants, animals, and macroinvertebrates.

  • Maintain water courses free from algae, tumbleweeds and other debris.

  • Assist with monitoring including bird surveys, vegetation mapping, and charting water levels.

  • Responsible for infrastructure maintenance including signage, fences, locks, water control structures, ATV, mower, herbicides, shed, tools and truck.

  • Regularly monitor for trespass and vandalism and maintain non-access areas with signage or staking and flagging.

  • Help manage and maintain bird survey database and work with NAS science team to share key summaries.

  • Conduct appropriate ARC GIS mapping activities associated with Gillmor Sanctuary water, invasive weed, and other land management needs.

  • Assist with development and writing public and private grants.

  • Partner with local Audubon chapters, other organizations and agencies and universities to s trengthen stewardship of the sanctuary through organized volunteer workdays, fieldtrips and other opportunities.

  • Serve as a public representative of Audubon and the Gillmor Sanctuary team which may include presentations, public speaking, mee ing participation and/or other interactions with agencies, NGOs, Audubon chapters, and landowners to both gather and disseminate information.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife or natural resources-related fields. An equivalent combination of education, shorebird and/or wetland management experience will also be considered, preferably on the Great Salt Lake.

  • At least three years of work experience in on- the- ground land management with a conservation non-governmental organization and/or government natural resource management agency required.

  • Willingness to work in a remote location.

  • Ability to perform strenuous activities in often times harsh conditions including hot and cold temperatures, uneven terrain, and biting insects.

  • Proven ability to think strategically and work both cooperatively and independently

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentations, and the ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience with scientific and policy commentary a plus.

  • Experience with grant writing and fundraising a plus.

  • Strong time and project management skills, including the ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to build consensus among a diverse range of individuals (e.g. conservation partners, private landowners and ranchers, volunteers, and local community members).

  • Excellent collaboration skills with the ability to reconcile different viewpoints to achieve conservation outcomes.

  • Ability to participate in virtual and in-person meetings.

  • A passion for birds and natural resource conservation.

  • Knowledge and experience with bird and plant identification strongly preferred.

  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other key Microsoft Office and web-based products. Familiarity with social media.

  • Experience with Arc GIS and other ESRI programs/products.

  • Must have or be willing to obtain herbicide applicator certification.

  • Willingness and ability to conduct in-state travel and work early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends as job responsibilities require.

  • Ability to traverse long distances on uneven terrain and lift up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance.

  • Valid driver's license required.

  • Adherence to all field and psychological safety protocols established within NAS.
