JOB SUMMARY

This position plans and provides co-teaching instruction to students based on state, District, and school curricula and requirements, and based on the students' IEPs in an elementary Pre-Kindergarten mild/moderate collaborative classroom.  

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES 

Plan and Prepare Instruction

  1. Creates developmentally and linguistically appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
  2. Develops lessons that are accessible and culturally relevant based on individual students' strengths, interest and needs.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of the Utah Core Standards and references them in short- and long-term planning.
  4. Incorporates disciplinary-specific literacy skills into instruction to purposefully engage learners in interacting with content knowledge.
  5. Demonstrates knowledge of content pedagogy and knowledge of students and their developmental needs.
  6. Develops clear and relevant instructional goals based on important content area concepts and suitability for students.
  7. Uses a wide variety of resources appropriate for diverse learning styles.
  8. Designs coherent instruction for flexible groupings that includes, clear and focused lesson structure and appropriate timing according to student needs.
  9. Plans lessons with knowledge of learning through play and other PreK best instructional practices.

Demonstrates Professional Responsibility

  1. Works to plan and instruct with PreK general education teacher assigned to the classroom.
  2. Reflects on own teaching by assessing a lesson's effectiveness and drawing on a repertoire of alternative approaches.
  3. Communicates to engage families in the instructional program by providing information about the instructional programs and individual student progress.
  4. Maintains special education files, student funding reports and other paperwork as required by District, State and Federal requirements.
  5. Participates in individual education plan (IEP) meetings, multi-disciplinary team meetings, and other meetings as needed.
  6. Works effectively with occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, district psychologists, and community agencies to develop, maintain, and evaluate student performance and IEP goals.
  7. Conferences with educational staff, parents, students, and outside agencies. Serves as a consultant to the general education staff, administrators, and parents.
  8. Train paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
  9. Understands and applies legal concepts in Special Education timely and adequately.
  10. Understands and implements District adopted Special Education techniques, instruments, processes, and procedures timely and adequately.

Establishes a Classroom Climate Conducive to Learning

  1. Manages student behaviors in special education classroom. Follows all FBA/BIP plans for behavior with fidelity, when applicable.
  2. Develops learning experiences that engage and support students as self-directed learners who internalize classroom routines, expectations, and procedures.
  3. Collaborates with students to establish a pos itive learning climate of openness, respectful interactions, support, and inquiry.
  4. Utilizes positive classroom management strategies, including the resources of time, space, and attention effectively. 
  5. Creates a respectful classroom environment by establishing positive and respectful teacher-student interactions that are appropriate to developmental and cultural norms.
  6. Establishes a culture for learning by setting an expecta ion for learning and achievement, conveying the importance of the content, and displaying knowledge of students' skills.
  7. Manages classroom procedures and protocols, including those regarding instructional groups, transitions, handling materials and supplies, and performing non-instructional duties that are age appropriate for PreK students.

Provides Effective Instruction

  1. Plan, collaborate, and co-teach with general education PreK teacher to ensure that students access the general curriculum, to the extent appropriate.
  2. Identify appropriate accommodations for students to address behavioral and academic needs in general education settings and monitor students' success in general education settings, making appropriate adjustments in their accommodations, as needed.
  3. Programs for and instructs students with disabilities, such as learning disabilities, behavior disorders, intellectual disabilities, communication disorders, orthopedic impairments, traumatic brain injury, visual and hearing impairments, other health impairments, and autism.
  4. Communicates clearly and accurately, using appropriate vocabulary for age and interests.
  5. Engages students in learning through use of play, instruction, student groupings, and pacing of the activities.
  6. Provides specific and timely feedback to students, staff and parents.
  7. Is flexible and responsive to student learning by adjusting lessons, responding to student questions and interests, and persisting in providing a variety of approaches when students have difficulties.

Monitors Student Learning

  1. Monitors and reports progress on IEP goals.
  2. Maintains accurate records of students' completion of assignments, student progress, and other non-instructional records.
  3. Toileting including the changing of diapers or the support of potty training at the school site.
  4. Allows students different ways to demonstrate learning sensitive to multiple experiences and diversity, while holding high expectations.
  5. Uses both formative and summative data sources to assess the effectiveness of instruction and to make adjustments in planning and instruction.
  6. Documents student progress and provides descriptive feedback to students, parents, and other stakeholders in a variety of ways.

  9. Is responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-530 Utah Effective Educator Standards at all levels to teacher development.
  10. Is responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-515 Utah Educator Professional Standards.
  11. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements in an efficient and effective manner; required to attend activities, events, and meetings outside of normal work hours on a regular basis.
