The Neuroscience TRC is committed to development of transformational therapeutics for patients with neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. We have built a network of external partnerships across multiple treatment modalities (small molecules, biologics and RNA targeting) that leverage our leadership in protein homeostasis and inflammation to attack neurodegenerative, neuromuscular and neuropsychiatric diseases.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following approaches:

Disease modifying therapies for neurodegenerative, neuro-inflammatory and neuromuscular diseases; CNS targets that modulate protein homeostasis, protein clearance, inflammation and reduce or eliminate toxic protein production; Neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with neurodegenerative diseases; Emerging technologies (RNA targeting) that when matched to underlying disease genetics can deliver a precision medicine portfolio with a high probability of success to address unmet medical needs; Targets in neuromuscular diseases. Use approaches in cellular, preclinical and translational tools and technologies such as multiomics in tissue and fluid samples to identify novel biomarkers to track drug-target interactions and disease impact.

Here, you'll get the chance to grow and thrive through opportunities that are uncommon in scale and scope. You'll pursue innovative ideas while advancing professionally alongside some of the brightest minds in biopharma.

Position Summary:

The Senior Associate Scientist is a laboratory-based, integral member of the Neuroscience TRC (San Diego site) with a focus on research projects and small and large molecule asset support for a broad range of neurodegenerative indications. The successful applicant will leverage their experience in neuroscience/neuroimmunology and in vitro/ex vivo expertise, working collaboratively with other team members across disciplines to pharmacologically characterize target engagement and pharmacodynamics in CNS-relevant models such as ex vivo tissues, iPSCs/coculture systems and organoids. This position offers great potential for continued growth with exposure to all aspects of disease modelling and drug development and as such, in vivo experience would be considered advantageous. The Senior Associate Scientist will also be in a position to work on project teams across functions and sites and contribute to regulatory submissions.

The desired laboratory skills include cell and protein detection and familiarity with technologies such as flow cytometry, gene expression, various imaging techniques, ELISA and Simple Western. The successful applicant should be comfortable with assay development, troubleshooting experimental procedures and data analysis and proficient in cell culture techniques, including conduct of assays to characterize molecules in iPSC-derived neural cells (mono-, bi- and tri-culture). Good communication skills as well as strong teamwork and team-spirit are required.

Position Responsibilities:

In the role as a Senior Associate Scientist within the Neuroscience Preclinical Sciences group, the ideal candidate will be responsible for:

  • Implementation and validation of assay systems in relevant cell types to screen and characterize the pharmacological responses to modulation with small and large molecules.

  • Development of assays in iPSC/cocultures/organoids with functional readouts that are relevant to the primary neurodegeneration indication and reflective of human genetics or epidemiology.

  • Generate, record and report raw data and interpret to refine the next steps.

  • Ensuring the proper documentation of all data in electronic notebooks.

  • Analysis and presentation of data (eg, Excel and GraphPad Prism), as appropriate and including statistical analysis.

  • Presentation of data updates at project team and departmental meetings.

Experience:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 4+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Master's Degree

  • 2+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cell and protein analysis methods including flow cytometry, ELISA and simple western systems is preferred.

  • Experience with tissue culture techniques and in particular, iPSC-derived neural cells.

  • Experience with human samples (eg, blood) is considered advantageous.

  • The candidate must have strong organizational skills and the ability to work well independently as well as in a highly matrixed team-oriented environment.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the desire to present scientific findings and data to broader teams.

  • Motivated and detail-oriented with a strong interest in driving productivity in clinically directed research.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and GraphPad Prism is required.
