General Atomics and Affiliated Companies Senior Hardware Test Engineer in San Diego, California

These product lines include large linear motors, Large high speed permanent magnet motors, power inverters, high-energy capacitors, high-voltage direct current power distribution systems.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Test Engineer with an electrical background to design specialty test equipment for ALRE (Advanced Launching and Recovery Equipment) and hypersonic missile components as well as electrical ground support equipment for satellites and associated payload systems. This position will interact with all levels of the technical staff and report to the System Test & Integration Manager

The Senior Test Engineer in this position is expected to support a very broad range of production and factory acceptance testing for large shipboard power system equipment, subsystems and PCBAs. Tests include design verification tests combined with operational tests. Lifecycle, ESS and broad environmental and stress testing must also be supported.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the development of concepts and plans for test programs

  • Guide the translation of system or product requirements into verification tests and instructions

  • Guide the design concepts, criteria and engineering efforts for testing while working closely with the design engineering organization

  • Create and update Test procedures and assist sub-contractors in design and execution of various tests on system, sub-system, and component level electronics

  • Be able to prepare for and present at test readiness reviews to GA staff and the customer as required by the program and test director

  • Lead efforts to install and set-up instrumentation at the sites to log data and execute the tests as directed by the Test Director

  • Conduct testing and verification as directed by the Test Director / Manager

  • Take a lead role to execute and direct subsystem and component level test operations

  • Provide technical direction to technicians and subcontractors

  • Applies technical knowledge to analyze, investigate and resolve test engineering problems

  • Identify test data issues and interpret collected data for preparation and creation of test reports

  • Responsible for establishing, and ensuring work is accomplished in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices

  • Travel up to 25% to test sites located in, but not limited to, Southern California, Alabama, Virginia, and Mississippi

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of electrical engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory with experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts

  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts, apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment, then organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases, and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems

  • Must have strong communication, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Ability to perform complex tasks in several engineering areas,

  • Capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact while coordinating a team of experienced professional employees

  • Good computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are required

  • Must be able to work extended hours and travel as needed

  • May be required to obtain and maintain a US security clearance

  • Experience conducting tests in a development and production environment

  • Working knowledge of IEEE codes

  • Working knowledge of electrical subsystem and system level testing and experience with PCBA level tests

  • Experience with test program specification and development in common test languages such as LabVIEW, C++, MATLAB or Python

  • Familiarity with Test Program Specification (TPS) languages

  • Experience using complex instrumentation, such as multi-signal oscilloscopes, wave form generators, spectrum analyzer and the SCPI API

  • Experience designing data acquisition systems

  • Experience in writing technical documents such as test procedures and test reports is desired

  • Experience in communicating technical information to peers, test director and customer is desired

  • Experience with task reporting for schedule and cost performance to the project baseline is desired

  • Have a desire to work in a fast-paced testing environment

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
