Here, you’ll do more than join something — you’ll add something. Apple is looking for a Sr. Equipment (EQ) Design Engineer to join our Panel Process and Optics (PPO) Engineering team. The role is responsible for working with process engineers in crafting, developing, and fabricating prototype equipments to develop and validate new process architectures and tackle sophisticated product design challenges. The candidate will work internally with our process teams and with outside equipment manufacturers to build fully automated novel equipment from the concept/architecture stage through mass production (MP), with a focus on back-end display module integration. We are looking for an individual in this role that will serve as a focal point of equipment design innovation, enabling scalable processes and achieving novel product designs, with outstanding Apple product qualities. We work at a fast pace and require everyone to be highly self-motivated. A successful candidate needs to be a flexible problem solver and be able to determine solutions outside of their core technical expertise areas.

Description

  • Develop new equipment architectures to enable novel process solutions across various Apple products - Drive EQ innovations from concept to MP through concurrent efforts of internal EQ design & testing and synchronized engagement with external EQ suppliers - Perform EQ DFMEA standard methodologies and lead DFM reviews with vendors to develop reliable, high-performance and lost-cost manufacturing process equipment - Conduct detailed data collection and EQ capability analysis through modeling or empirical testing for EQ architecture down-selection - Lead root cause & failure analysis and improvement path identification for issues related to new EQ technologies - Provide early and ongoing manufacturing leadership to ensure new process is scalable for mass production - Multi-functional interaction with Product Design, Display Engineering, Display Operations, and international vendors - Drive EQ, component or integration vendors on technology development and implementation, failure or issue resolution, and cost-effective scale up for mass production - Keep tabs on relevant industrial equipment and process manufacturing technology trends; evaluate and assess new EQ suppliers

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. degree minimum in Applied Physics, Robotics, ME, ChE or related field with minimum of 10 years of industrial experience in a related field

  • Domain expertise in crafting and fabricating successful precision equipments in the display, sensor, camera, optical assembly, or other related modules

  • Experience developing new MP EQs, defining new EQ specifications, and leading EQ DFM reviews with vendors

  • Experience in leading a project from lab scale development to mass volume production

  • Understanding of failure mode analysis, root cause investigation, and problem-solving for process and EQ

  • Familiarity with data handling and analysis, documentation (e.g. spec definition)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related field with experience in related industry

  • Hands-on development of display module processes and EQ such as lamination, bonding, thermal-forming, dispensing, etc.

  • Familiarity and expertise in Laser process and EQ development such as in Laser trimming, Laser drilling, etc.

  • Proficient in computer-aided-design (CAD) software packages such as NX

  • Sound understanding and experience in EQ automation and production line integration

  • Understanding of EQ cost of ownership calculations

  • Demonstrated ability to perform DOE, data analysis, SPC control using statistical software such as JMP

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated capability to lead vendors

  • Ability for international business travel to support project implementation and collaborate with external vendors for product manufacturing

  • Excellent data handling and analysis, documentation, and organizational skills

  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $166,600 and $296,300, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs.
