Compass Family Services Assistant Program Director, Rental Subsidies in San Francisco, California

About the Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

About the team: Compass' SF HOME C-HOME team helps homeless families stabilize and maintain housing through temporary rental subsidies. All families are provided with long-term case management to support housing and economic self-sufficiency.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, primarily during standard business hours

Compensation: $66K - $75K annually

Location: 1061 Market St., San Francisco. Fully in-person (not hybrid or remote)

Responsibilities:

The Assistant Program Director is responsible for directly supervising staff, overseeing programs, ensuring compliance with contracts, and supporting the Program Director in managing the C-HOME team.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Directly supervise a team of Case Managers responsible for helping families approved for rental assistance build long-term stability in housing.

  • Onboard and train new Case Managers

  • Conduct weekly supervision meetings with Case Managers to review progress, provide support and direction, resolve challenges, and ensure high quality job performance.

  • Support the professional development of Case Managers with training, professional development planning, and annual performance reviews.

  • Ensure that Case Managers provide the support to clients required by the C-HOME program, including regular check-ins, home visits and resource referrals.

  • Ensure that Case Managers are trained in and are using appropriate support skills with clients, including Motivational Interviewing, EMPath, and de-escalation.

  • Approve and facilitate check requests from Case Managers to ensure families receive furniture and other basic necessities.

  • Ensure Case Managers are working appropriately with clients to set and complete goals related to economic and housing stability.

  • Support Case Managers in responding to client crises, difficulties, and other urgent needs.

  • Coordinate with the Program Directors and Assistant Program Directors of other SF-HOME divisions to ensure that Housing Locators and Case Management staff work together to support families.

  • Ensure excellent data quality standards and record keeping. Conduct regular file audits to ensure client files and data stay up to date.

  • Track and report outcomes for the program.

  • Develop relationships with funders and other key stakeholders. Attend relevant meetings to represent Compass' interests.

  • Collaborate with the Program Director on staff hiring.

  • Function as acting director during Program Director's vacation and sick leave.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of experience working in social services with homeless individuals or those at risk of homelessness

  • At least 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience, including proven ability to oversee major projects or programs, track multiple work streams, and oversee the work of others.

  • Experience with successful program implementation and design

  • Deep understanding of trauma-informed care and of the challenges that homeless individuals face.

  • Ability to assess and de-escalate potentially volatile situations

  • Deep commitment to and demonstrated success discussing, integrating, and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging throughout a complex and dynamic organization

  • Excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills

  • Outstanding work habits: punctual, reliable, cooperative, team-oriented

  • Excellent writing and organizational skills

  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Suite of Programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)

  • Strong attention to detail is critical for success in this position.

  • Ability to work independently while being part of a team.

  • Valid CA driver's license and ability to be approved as a Zipcar driver required.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $66,000 - $75,000 depending on experience.

  • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation your first year, increasing to 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.

  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.

  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5.

Location and Covid safety:

  • Fully in-person, either at our office at 1061 Grove St. or in the community.

  • Covid vaccination required for all staff.
