Compass Family Services Crisis Response Counselor (swing shift) in San Francisco, California

About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

About the team: Compass Urgent Accommodation Voucher program provides temporary emergency hotel rooms for families and pregnant people in crisis. In addition to a hotel room, the program helps families connect with services and a path to stable housing.

Compensation: $28-31 per hour + full benefits

Schedule: 4pm-midnight, five days per week. We have two openings: one person will work Sunday - Thursday with Fridays and Saturdays off; the other will work Tuesday through Saturday with Sundays and Mondays off.

Location: Hybrid. For the first three months, the Counselor will work at our 111 Page Street office and at the hotels where families stay. After three months, the counselor may be able to work the later part of their hours remotely as long as they stay in San Francisco during the entire shift.

Position Description:

The Counselor answers the after-hours hotline and speaks with families who need emergency shelter. When needed, they will meet families at a hotel to check in and get settled, and respond to any crises that arise during their shift.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Respond to calls from the after-hours hotline and assist families in need of emergency shelter with emergency hotel reservations.

  • Provide after-hours crisis intervention.

  • Assist Program Director and Case Manager with managing UAV program waitlist.

  • Enter notes into Salesforce and ONE System databases.

  • Complete site reports and incident reports.

Qualifications:

  • Must be comfortable working alone, overnight, and traveling to meet families at the hotel at any point during the shift.

  • Understanding of issues facing homeless families and of trauma-informed care.

  • Strong communication skills, particularly over the phone.

  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal direct supervision.

  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Google Suite). Salesforce experience a plus.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $28 - $31 per hour.

  • Paid time off: just under 4 weeks of vacation your first year, just under 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.

  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.

  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5.
