Position Overview:

Performs pharmaceutical procedures for medication preparation and distribution that ensures safe, effective, and cost-efficient medication therapy. Performs one or more of the following advanced level technician work: final medication checks under California Board of Pharmacy (CA BOP) approved technician-check-technician program; second-level controlled substance management functions including statistical analysis of controlled substance utilization; medication utilization data capture; complex, high-cost, or hazardous sterile compounding; knowledge of federal 340B program requirements with ability to optimize procurement strategies while meeting regulatory requirements, performs patient medication history interviews and EHR documentation. Exercises sound judgment and has developed clinical skills to provide pharmaceutical support to the patient's plan of care based on the diagnosis. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety. Able to serve as primary trainer and competency administrator for all tasks.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

PHARMACY SERVICES:

  • Assists in the provision of pharmaceutical services including drug preparation, distribution, inventory control, quality control, and proper documentation according to policy and procedure.

  • Performs billing, pricing, record keeping, and provision of services required to meet regulatory requirements.

  • Maintains records of drug distribution, works with vendors to requisition or return drugs.

  • Accurately interprets, transcribes, and dispenses orders/prescriptions, under the direction of a pharmacist.

  • Mentors and fosters a constructive teaching environment

  • Addresses second-level technical and mechanical issues with automated dispensing devices, pharmacy databases, and vertical carousels critical to maintaining pharmacy operations.

  • Performs final medication checks under CA BOP approved technician-check-technician program.

  • Performs advanced medication management functions including second-level narcotics management functions including statistical analysis of narcotic utilization, direct interaction with nursing leadership for more complex investigations, medication utilization data capture.

  • Performs quarterly auditing functions, working knowledge of federal 340B program requirements, and optimize procurement strategies while meeting regulatory requirements.

  • Performs patient medication history interviews and Electronic Health Records (EHR) documentation.

  • Conducts specialty training and meets competency trainer requirements.

CLERICAL:

  • Performs general clerical tasks, such as answering phones; updating patient information; or retrieving, entering, and revising patient EHR.

  • Prepares and completes accurate documentation related to patients in medical and departmental records.

SAFETY:

  • Participates in quality improvement processes, including updating and revision of safety and procedure manuals and interdisciplinary projects.

  • Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment by complying with policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection-control protocols.

COMPLIANCE:

  • Maintains strictest confidence of all patient Protected Health Information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.

  • Assists in preparing, administering, and documenting medications and treatments in accordance with state and federal regulations.

  • Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration by assisting in monitoring nursing unit inspections; maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; and anticipating legislation.

  • Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation and licensure requirements.

  • Develops hospital staff's pharmacological knowledge by participating in clinical programs; training pharmacy staff, students, interns, externs, residents, and health care professionals.

EDUCATION:

Other: Graduate from an accredited Pharmacy Technician program

Advanced training in one of the core inpatient pharmacy technician accountabilities (e.g., Apexus Core Curriculum of the 340B University OnDemand, ASHP Sterile Compounding Certification, Sutter Health Hazardous Drug Compounding Course, Sutter Health Admission History Competency for Pharmacy Personnel, or other)

CERIFICATION & LICENSURE:

PHRMTECHR-Registered Pharmacy Technician

OR PHARMC-Certified Pharmacy Technician

OR PHARMT-Pharmacy Technician

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

4 years recent relevant experience

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, generic and trade pharmaceutical names, pharmaceutical calculations and laws and regulations.

  • Knowledge and understanding of different Pharmacy practice settings, including narcotic delivery and procedures.

  • Knowledge and ability to identify and employ pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing, and record keeping of medications.

  • Requires a basic working knowledge of legal requirements and accreditation standards including National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), The Joint Commission (TJC), Title XXII, United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Pharmacopeia (USP).

  • Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.

  • Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.

  • General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook), related pharmaceutical technology, EHR, and EPIC.

  • Carry out calculations and execute basic math skills needed for common dosage determination.

  • Prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies, procedures, and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.

  • Work independently, as well as be part of the team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.

  • Ensure the privacy of each patient’s PHI.

  • Identify, evaluate, and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options.

  • Build collaborative relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.

  • Ability to perform basic pharmacy buyer duties.

Pay Range is $40.93 to $51.14 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
