Exploratorium Manager, Living Systems Facility in San Francisco, California

SUMMARY

The Manager, Living Systems Facility manages the laboratory facility that supports the museum’s programmatic activity related to the life sciences. This position oversees and participates in lab functions including the culturing and maintenance of a variety of living specimens, and the preparation of specimens for the museum floor. Overseeing installation and maintenance of instrumentation essential to the facility, and mentors facility users. This position reports to and will work closely with the Senior Director of Science Research and Development and with the division’s Administrative Director to establish financial, use, and sustainability plans for the facility.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the Life Sciences Lab Facility, ensuring it provides the necessary support for current and developing Life Sciences exhibits and programmatic initiatives

  • Work closely with museum leadership to identify and monitor goals and direction for the facility and implementation strategies for its use

  • Define, create, and monitor facility timelines, schedules, and budgets

  • Manage staff, interns, and resource needs

  • Establish and implement appropriate policies and procedures and protocols

  • Ensure that the lab facility is functioning in a safe and ethical manner, and is compliant with local, state and federal regulations

  • Conduct general oversight of the facility instrumentation and upgrades including contracting with and overseeing the work of external vendors; specifying, installing and operating new instrumentation

  • Mentor and train staff involved in developing projects related to the life sciences who use the lab facility

  • Supervise and host scientists visiting or conducting residencies in the facility

  • Act as a representative of the Exploratorium to outside agencies and scientists, including content experts and the museum community in relation to facility needs

  • Additional duties as assigned

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in Biology, Life Sciences, Zoology or a related biological science field

  • 3 years of experience in managing a laboratory facility

  • Demonstrated expertise in working with biological specimens of various sorts, particularly living tissue preparations and cell culture

  • Prior experience with laboratory instrumentation, research-grade microscopes, and related peripheral equipment

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, researchers, and outside specialists

  • Prior experience working with educational organizations a plus
