Ginger Labs Staff Engineer, Android in San Francisco, California

Notability's goal is to bring the expressivity of paper to the digital realm, so people can learn, study, and collaborate together better. Digital tools offer fantastic benefits, but the input methods can feel constraining — sometimes we need more than typed text. We want to bring the best of both worlds together: the flexibility and organic feel of paper, and the searchability, convenience, collaboration, and power of computers. These values are reflected in the way we work: we value empathy for our users, great design, and believe the best ideas can come from anywhere.

We pioneered this concept of digital paper when Notability was released in 2010 alongside the first iPad. Now we're building the next generation of paper, and that includes bringing Notability to Android. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to greenfield port a technically challenging app with a large & passionate user base. We are looking for a staff engineer to spearhead the development of the Android version of Notability.

This role is hybrid, 2+ days per week in the San Francisco office, and other days from home.

What You'll Do

  • Architect and develop a complex and high-performing native Android application

  • Solve difficult technical problems with a cutting edge Android stack

  • Create Android infrastructure such as build-pipelines, testing automation, release process, etc

  • Provide project leadership to break down, estimate, and organize work

  • Participate in code reviews and provide guidance and mentorship on software development best practices

  • Communicate progress and risks to the leadership team

  • Build a product that our customers genuinely love!

    What You Need

  • 8+ years of experience developing, architecting, optimizing and shipping high performance Android applications

  • Experience with large Android codebases and complex, high-performance apps

  • Strong product focus and acumen

  • Strong computer science fundamentals and problem solving skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication & collaboration skills

  • Passionate about solutions while humble in the face of opposing ideas

  • Desire to embrace the way engineering is changing (more immutable data, functional patterns, etc) while also being intensely pragmatic

  • Experience with CRDTs is a plus

We work in downtown SF near Market Street, just a short walk from two BART/Muni stations. Our open-plan office has height-adjustable desks to help us stay limber, spacious conference rooms for both small and large team meetings, a well stocked kitchen full of goodies, a beautiful outdoor patio with city views and a shuffleboard table to help us stay coordinated (or to enjoy during happy hour :).
