Colleen McAuliffe from Robert Half is looking for a Controller to join our San Jose, California, client within the non-profit industry. The Controller will oversee the organization's accounting and finance operations, including accounting, reporting, tax compliance, and treasury services. This role will involve staff management, ensuring timely and accurate accounting, and providing expertise on financial matters to the executive team.

Responsibilities:

Manage and guide the work of professionals in the department responsible for financial transactions and reporting, promoting teamwork and clear communication.

• Set, supervise, and manage financial protocols and guidelines in alignment with top practices for accounting within the charity sector

• Organize and supervise annual external audits, grant audits, and annual benefit plan audits

• Oversee the annual closure of the organization’s accounts, including the creation and assessment of yearly financial statements and audit schedules

• Collaborate with external auditors, tax preparers, and consultancy firms to ensure prompt and precise reporting and filings

• Deliver training and guidance to staff on specialized accounting issues and techniques

• Engage with the organization’s community to comprehend service and financial data needs

• Cooperate with the organization’s Budget and Contract teams on financial planning, projection, and operational requirements, ensuring compliance with state reporting

• Assume responsibility for special projects related to financial reporting and analysis, and involve in the development and enhancement of financial management resources

• Guarantee the financial system and any supporting systems are supervised and integrated efficiently to support accounting and reporting

• Establish accounting protocols and procedures to support effective business operations and provide guidance on operational strategies, performance metrics, and financial problems and opportunities

Requirements • Must have a minimum of 7 years of experience in a similar role within the non-profit sector

• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is required

• Extensive knowledge and experience working with non-profit organizations

• Proven experience in audit management

• Proficient in executing month-end close activities

• Skilled in preparing and managing month-end journal entries

• Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills

• Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities

• Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines

• Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Office Suite

• Must possess high ethical standards and integrity in both their personal and professional dealings

• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

• Strong understanding of regulatory standards and compliance within the non-profit sector.
