The Manager of Equipment Safety will play a key role in supporting safe industrial machinery, equipment, and automated system implementation and modification as part of the Newell Brands Global Automation Strategy.

Key responsibilities include developing and implementing safety protocols, guiding and monitoring compliance and adherence to Newell Brands safety and ergonomic standards, and acting as a corporate equipment and workplace Safety SME. This role will influence the development and implementation of new equipment and automation, as well as modifications to existing equipment and processes.

This is a highly visible position which requires collaboration with site resources and relevant center Engineering and Automation SMEs, as well as periodic reporting to Supply Chain leadership. The objective is to ensure all deployed equipment is compliant with industry and internal corporate standards, focusing on safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop formal corporate safety guidelines and documentation for automated and non-automated equipment to enhance Newell Brands Global SEAL standards

  • Contribute to global equipment safety and ergonomic standards related to automation, controls, electrical, and mechanical systems

  • Develop training material and build organizational capability related to machine safety by providing training sessions and workshops

  • Act as SME on safety related standards, functional safety of machinery, and machine safeguarding

  • Advise sites and central teams on new and best practices, standards, and guidelines

  • Provide site-wide, area-wide, and machine-level safety support to sites

  • Work with site personnel and Central SMEs on FMEA, Risk Assessment, Risk mitigation, and other safety-related facets of projects

  • Conduct site visits with a focus on monitoring existing and in-construction safety elements to ensure adherence and compliance with regulations and Newell Brands standards and best practices

  • Participate in site SEAL audits in our network to ensure compliance with SEAL guidelines

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline. Electrical, Manufacturing, Robotics, Controls, or Mechanical Engineering preferred

  • 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing / automation field, with a demonstrated focus on equipment safety and ergonomics

  • Safety certifications related to equipment safety and/or functional safety of machinery (CMSE, CEFS, CSP, FS Eng, FS Tech, etc.,)

  • Strong understanding and experience in implementing OSHA standards (e.g. LOTO, machine safeguarding)

  • Working knowledge of broader safety standards (ISO, IEC, ANSI, RIA, etc.,), with a deep understanding of safety concepts and requirements in machinery and automation

  • Experience supporting project teams in the implementation of safety-compliant automation solutions

  • Ability to read and interpret drawing sets (Electrical, Mechanical, etc.), with focus on safety topics related to the Electrical and Controls aspects of automated systems

  • Familiarity with the safety considerations surrounding the implementation of industrial, collaborative, and mobile robots

  • Experience performing FMEA and Safety Risk Assessment on automated processes

  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain automation and safety concepts to employees with different levels of understanding and exposure

  • Skilled and experienced in problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of Electrical and Controls safety standards (NFPA 70e, NFPA 79, UL508a, etc.)

  • Experience with standards governing industrial and collaborative robots (ISO 10218, ANSI/RIA R15.06, ISO/TS 15066)

  • Strong understanding of machinery safety standards (ANSI/ISO 12100, ANSI B11, etc.)

  • Strong understanding of Functional Safety and familiarity with Performance Levels (ISO 13849) and/or Safety Integrity Levels (IEC 62061), as well as corresponding controls architectures

  • Direct experience with design and implementation of safety systems in automation applications (e.g. Cobots, AGVs, ASRS, etc.)

  • Understanding of cybersecurity (IT/OT, best practices)

  • Experience with Safety Controllers and Safety PLC programming, preferably Allen Bradley

  • Fundamental understanding of the various Engineering disciplines; Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechatronics

  • Familiarity with injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, extrusion, metal stamping, welding, and assembly

  • Collaborative robot experience with associated peripheral equipment (vision systems, force gauges, end of arm tooling options, safety accommodations, etc.)

  • Experience with 2D & 3D CAD skills such as floor layouts and tooling designs

  • TPM, Lean, or Early Equipment Management experience a plus

Climate

Must work effectively in decentralized team supporting our global manufacturing and distribution sites. Must clearly communicate concepts, goals, standards, and Newell Brands requirements to corporate and site-based personnel. An adaptive and flexible approach is a factor for success.
