The Role

The Senior Cost Estimator will be flexible in a constantly changing environment, work well on a team and can also function autonomously as required by deliverable schedules, is highly organized, and can articulate and effectively communicate complex topics to non-specialists. This role reports into the Engineering, Procurement & Construction department.

Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop new and help refine existing processes for ensuring all projects have cost estimates linked to the design and scope, with appropriate contingencies related to the maturity of the project.

  • Own the cost estimate product and incorporate input from stakeholders.

  • Continue to develop the existing cost estimate model through Excel Workbooks and refine model reporting for issuance to stakeholders/wider audiences.

  • Develop the process for providing cost estimates to the organization (tasking, delegation, version control, and workflow).

  • Assist in the development of training materials for future estimating personnel.

  • Communicate and collaborate with prospective EPC partners, and work with those contacts to effectively scope projects and compare/level incoming bids against internal cost estimates.

  • Review EPC bids for accuracy against technical specifications.

  • Participate in negotiations with EPCs for market competitiveness.

  • Collaborate with other team members and management to help form a view on forward costs. Analyze and make recommendations on cost impact of new technology.

  • Conduct site visits with potential EPCs. Travel (5-10 times per year) to visit project sites and other Cypress offices.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 2-4 year’s work experience in estimating and 5 years of overall work experience, preferably in solar project development, construction, finance, engineering consulting, or relevant experience.

  • Undergraduate degree in Civil / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering / Physics / Construction Management.

  • Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications.

  • Familiarity with PVsyst preferred.

  • Strong Excel experience, experience building cost estimating tools, familiarity with Python.

  • Proficient understanding of entire solar project lifecycle; energy storage knowledge a plus.

  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of team, knowing when to seek help.

  • Flexibility to modify course in real-time in response to fluid facts and circumstances.

  • Proactive and solution-focused communication skills which extend across all organizational and management levels.
