New England Cancer Specialists Surgical Primary Nurse- Breast in Scarborough, Maine

Job Descriptions:

New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking a Full-Time 32 hour Breast Surgical Primary Nurse. The Breast Surgical Primary Nurse will use clinical knowledge to offer individualized care to patients, families, and caregivers to help navigate care pre and post-surgery. They provide nursing assessments, and the triage of patient care needs over the phone and in the office. They offer advice, counsel patients, and advise physicians of patient needs and recommended interventions. They work collaboratively with the Breast Surgeons, APPs, RN peers, Patient Care Coordinators, as well as the Breast Medical Oncology teams, and other clinical and non-clinical personnel within and outside the practice.

NECS is a private medical practice composed of 18 oncologists and hematologists serving the region from six separate locations in Maine and New Hampshire. Required Experience:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Point of contact for referring physicians, patients, and caregivers to assist with patient scheduling and coordination of care.

  • Coordinating appointments with providers to ensure timely delivery of diagnostic and treatment services and ensures that appropriate medical records are available for these appointments. Facilitates linkages to follow-up services.

  • Assist physicians; conduct patient assessments.

  • Maintain communication with patients, families, and the health care providers to monitor patient satisfaction with pre and post surgery

  • Receive patient telephone calls and intervene appropriately for that patient’s specific needs in a timely manner. Alert physician as needed to patient needs that require physician intervention.

  • Follow up with patients as needed by telephone to evaluate changing or uncertain clinical situations.Arrange language translation and/or interpretation services as needed.

  • Maintain patient care standards and assures that patient care functions, such as assessment, treatment and documentation are completed safely and effectively.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, in-services and continuing education programs, national and regional professional organizations and community sponsored programs specific to surgical oncology.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Must have IV skills.

  • Proven knowledge of Oncology practice strategies.

  • Proven organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proactive initiative to identify issues and recommend solutions. Ability to handle multiple priorities.

  • High ethical standards. Intense desire to succeed. Ability to make tough decisions. Change agent.

  • Knowledge of the nature of diseases, their treatments both curative and palliative, and the side effects of related therapies.

  • Knowledge of area agencies and willingness to collaborate with these agencies, initiating referrals when applicable.

Education and/or Experience

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Licensed Nurse within State of Maine required.

  • Two years plus nursing professional experience required

  • Hematology/Oncology experience preferred.

  • OCN required within 1 (one) year of hire or when eligible based on ONCC criteria

  • ONS Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Certification required within 6 (six) months of hire

  • AONN required within 2 (two) years of hire
