WHAT WILL YOU DO AS A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN?

The Pharmacy Technician assists the Pharmacist in performing his/her distributive and professional duties. Responsibilities include assisting in the dispensing of drugs, transport and delivery of drugs, repackaging of drugs, charging and crediting of medications, operation and restocking of automated dispensing devices, batch processing and labeling of IV additives, restocking of medications and non-drug supplies, sales of Rx and OTC products to employees, answering the telephone and responding to staff requests at the inpatient and outpatient/employee windows. All functions are performed under the supervision, review and approval of a Pharmacist.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

• Assist in the dispensing of medications.

• Operation of automated dispensing devices for daily unit dose cart fill.

• Repackaging of medications in unit dose or robot ready form.

• Delivery and pickup of medications and IV additives (IVs).

• Restock pharmacy work areas and automated dispensing cabinets. Fill floor stock orders and charge replacement slips. Bill or cost out medications not automatically charged and credit reusable unit dose medications.

• Batch processing and labeling of IV additives.

• Customer oriented service to employees, physicians and their dependents.

• Operation of the Pyxis Machine and the restock of the drawers.

• All logs, controlled substance records properly and other documents are checked for system accuracy and completeness.

• Perform other duties as required.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BE A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN?

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):

The pharmacy technician must have a high school or GED diploma. Further academic coursework or experience in the medical science field is preferred but not required. It is preferred the technician have at least one year of similar experience in another healthcare organization, retail pharmacy or a position which involved comparable or related duties in another service industry. Technician certification or completion of a formal training program in preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period of time, in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language, in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language. Salary Range: $16.63-$24.11/hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
