Geisinger Associate Dean Medical Student Affairs in Scranton, Pennsylvania

Job Summary

The Associate Dean for Medical Student Affairs provides administrative leadership and oversight to operations in MD Student Affairs. Working in conjunction with the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Associate Dean plays a key role in establishing the vision, strategic planning and direction for medical student services, monitoring and developing programs and activities to adhere to all accreditation standards and serves as the central contact for medical students and the community regarding components of the medical student experience. The Associate Dean for Medical Student Affairs provides leadership and vision in support of GCSOM’s commitment to prepare students for high quality patient centered care and careers in the medical field. The Associate Dean is responsible for oversight of student progression and retention within the MD program, career exploration and residency matching programming, and for continuous quality improvement of related activities associated with Middle States and LCME accreditation standards. In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Medical Student Education, the Associate Dean for Medical Student Affairs is charged with oversight of the Learning Communities and academic and career advising, learning environment and that student protection policies are consistently communicated and applied within the program.

Job Duties

  • Provides administrative leadership and oversight to operations in MD Student Affairs ensuring accountability across all campuses

  • Provide strategic vision and oversight to student affairs-related areas of LCME accreditation with particular focus on student progression and retention within the MD program, learning environment and learning communities/advising, and career exploration and residency matching programming

  • Chair the LCME Student Support Sub-Committee

  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Medical Education, Office of Medical Student Education and the GCSOM faculty to ensure that students learn in a safe and productive environment and that student protection policies are consistently communicated and applied within the program.

  • Support and advance the learning environment for the MD program serving as the School of Medicine’s liaison to the Learning Environment Committee.

  • Monitor the MD student experience and act as the Designated School Official for student mistreatment and the learning environment

  • Manage student protection policies including annual CQI to ensure compliance with LCME accreditation standards

  • Oversee management, and ongoing quality improvement of the GCSOM Campus Learning Communities.

  • Collaborate with faculty and regional deans on GCSOM academic and career advising services for MD students

  • Serve on curriculum and academic committees as related to the medical student academic and career programs

  • Collaborate with the key stakeholders to represent Medical Student Affairs on progress monitoring and promotions committees.

  • Serve on committee to support the development and execution of professional development plans for students referred for ongoing professionalism support

  • Manage MD student requests for and return from leave of absence

  • Provide strategic oversight and supervision of the Center for Learning Excellence (CLE) to include ongoing visioning and quality improvement in collaboration with the Director

  • Oversee longitudinal academic progress monitoring in the MD program

  • Serve on the Accessibility Committee

  • Provide strategic oversight and supervision of the Center for Career Development (CCD) to include ongoing visioning and quality improvement in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and MD Career Advising

  • Assume the responsibilities of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs as needed

  • Provides on call after hours support for the Division of Student Affairs

  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and student programming including but not limited to orientation, White Coat, Commencement
