Job Description

The Academic Services Manager is responsible for providing, coordinating, and supervising, the activities and functions of several of the Disability Resources for Students (DRS) accommodation/service programs. They are responsible for ensuring the timely and effective provision of accommodations for qualified students with disabilities in accordance with state and federal guidelines and regulations.

Primary responsibilities will include: providing direct service and delivery of approved accommodations, managing daily operations of the Classroom Access Service (CAS) program, providing technical and instructional support to DRS students and faculty on the services and effective delivery of CAS programs accommodations. They also have oversight of recruiting, hiring, training and supervising staff to assist in completing tasks associated with their services and programs.

This position is responsible for the daily delivery and program management of specific services and programs with a federal mandate to determine, manage, and facilitate accommodations for students with documented disabilities. This involves interactions among complex systems in an increasingly technical field, as well as ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. This position requires a high level of independent decision-making and professional judgment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Program Management and Administration

  • Manage daily operations of the Disability Resources for Students (DRS) Classroom Access Services (CAS) program.

  • Partner with academic staff, DRS Access Coordinators, and the Testing Services Manager to facilitate effective delivery of approved accommodations.

  • Manage and facilitate service operations of the DRS Note Taking accommodation service provision. Partner with academic staff and DRS Access Coordinators to facilitate effective delivery of approved accommodations.

  • Manage and facilitate service operations of the DRS Room Relocation and Alternative Furniture accommodation(s) for students. Partner and coordinate with UW Classroom Support Services, Building Coordinators, UW Time Schedule, and DRS Access Coordinators to ensure appropriate facilitation of accommodations.

  • Establish and maintain accurate records and files of equipment; establish and maintain appropriate procedures for service delivery; work in established office program databases.

  • Prepare a quarterly report for the DRS Assistant Director, or designee, for each assigned accommodation/service program to include information on faculty/student usage, summary of programs/services efforts, budget information and tracking, and other pertinent or requested information.

  • Perform regular assessments and evaluations related to assigned programs and services.

  • Regularly update applications and maintain equipment used in the Testing Center and Accessible Media Center.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed student case management and program management records in accordance with office and University policies and procedures. Direct Accommodation Delivery

  • Work directly with DRS students explaining the process of note-taking, classroom relocation requests, and other classroom access programs and services. Assess students with classroom access barriers to determine most effective options of CAS services based on accommodation needs.

  • Provide technical and instructional support for faculty and students with disabilities regarding the use of adaptive technology in higher education settings, including specific applications, peripherals, and devices required for examinations and classroom access needs based on approved accommodations.

  • Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information. Accommodation Services Support

  • Research department and/or program needs and make recommendations as appropriate.

  • Understand and appropriately apply, interpret and explain office and University policies and procedures and State and Federal rules, regulations and laws (e.g., Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990).

  • Provide technical and instructional assistance and support for faculty, staff, administration and students working with students with disabilities.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed student case management and program management records in accordance with office and University policies and procedures. Other

  • Create, foster, and maintain collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, administration and students.

  • Remain current on research and legal activity in the field and national trends to guide policy/procedure development/revision and recommend improvements in the delivery of services to campus.

  • Support business continuity of DRS Testing Center as backup to DRS Testing Services Manager.

  • Assist in other duties and complete special projects at the direction of the Associate Director and Director. Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student staff responsible for assisting with effective delivery of assigned accommodation/service programs. Supervision

  • The Academic Services Manager is supervised by, and reports to, the Assistant Director for Academic Services. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Higher Education Administration, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Business or related field (or equivalent).

  • Two to three years experience working with students with disabilities, administrative support and/or program operations.Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong ability to effectively support a culturally diverse student body.

  • Two to three years professional experience providing accommodations for students with disabilities in higher education.

  • Self-starter with strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong ability to effectively handle sensitive situations with diplomacy and confidentiality.

  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to work collaboratively with others.

  • Progressively increasing experience in program management.

  • Experience with supervision and/or direction of office support staff.

  • Knowledge of universal design and social model of disability.

  • Fluency in American Sign Language.

  • Knowledge of assistive technologies for people with disabilities.

  • Experience in and familiarity with higher education.

  • Strong computer skills including knowledge of common computer applications (e.g. word processing, database systems, spreadsheets, cloud storage, and project management applications).
