The School of Social Work has an exciting opening for an Assistant Dean for Development (Chief Advancement Officer). This is a full-time, permanent position.
The Assistant Dean for Development leads the School of Social Work’s Advancement team in reaching its fundraising goals by developing and leading the strategy for securing gifts from individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations. As part of the Dean’s leadership team, the Assistant Dean for Development will embody and uphold the School’s core values. Leadership within the School is expressed in diverse ways, reflecting the variety of styles and cultures that are represented by School faculty, students and staff. The Assistant Dean for Development works to increase public support and awareness of the School of Social Work, in collaboration with the Dean of the School of Social Work and the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Development of Health Sciences, through targeted fundraising, engagement and communication strategies.
The Assistant Dean for Development reports jointly to the Dean of the School of Social Work and the AVP for Development of Health Sciences.
What You Will Do: Frontline Fundraising (35%)
•Manage a portfolio of individual major gift prospects, including developing and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies for each assigned prospect with a special focus on securing major gifts ($100,000 and above). •Oversee the management of the School’s portfolio of corporate and foundation prospects. Collaborate with Advancement’s central Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations to help identify opportunities. •Enhance identification, engagement, solicitation and stewardship efforts for the School’s major donors, volunteers, friends, alumni, community and corporate leaders.
Leadership and Team Management (35%)
•Supervise the School of Social Work’s Advancement team and oversee the team’s day-to-day fundraising operations. •Create budgets and forecasts and manage finances within the Advancement team. Prepare and present quarterly and annual financial reports that outline trends, fundraising progress and gifts by type or source of funds to the Deans and Chairs. •In support of direct fundraising and advocacy, provide strategy, counsel and staffing to the School’s Board of Advisors and participate in other advancement-related committees. •Lead and support internal communications regarding the School of Social Work’s development initiatives and priorities.
Strategy Development (15%)
•As part of the University-wide Advancement planning process, establish both long- and short-term fundraising strategies for the School’s overall advancement activities. This includes annual gifts, major and planned gifts, corporate and foundation gifts, donor recognition and stewardship. •Develop strategies and direct the School’s external outreach activities with an aim of building and significantly expanding the base of potential donors. •In collaboration with the School’s marketing and communications team, provide strategic direction on the creation of an outreach plan that promotes the School’s fundraising and advancement objectives. •Provide strategic direction and leadership in the creation of a communications plan for internal and external constituencies that promotes the School’s private fundraising priorities and objectives. Oversee the production of advancement communications, including the alumni newsletter, brochures, reports, solicitation letters, etc.
Campaign Planning (15%)
•In close collaboration with the AVP for Development of Health Sciences, Dean of the School of Social Work and other University Advancement partners, coordinate campaign planning and preparation. This includes infrastructure development, volunteer identification/ recruitment, prospect prioritization, internal communications coordination, and case definition and positioning in support of the School and University priorities. •Actively steward and build on the success of past campaigns to successfully support future multimillion-dollar campaigns.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor's degree AND at least seven years of experience in institutional development/advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. What You Bring:
•Demonstrated major gift fundraising success at a comprehensive research university or health-care institution, including working knowledge of gift planning vehicles (charitable trusts, gift annuities and complex outright gifts). •Ability to understand the School's key priorities, navigate competing interests and identify sources of support that direct giving to the School’s key objectives. •Proven track record partnering with a Dean, Executive Director or equivalent. •Demonstrated ability to improve organizational effectiveness and results by providing strategic positioning, direction and leadership. •Demonstrated experience working with volunteers and not-for-profit boards, proactively identifying opportunities to engage volunteers as ambassadors and stakeholders and supporting their work. •Strong personnel and budget management experience or ability.
What You Can Expect:
•Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice. •Frequent local travel expected.
